Look at them run.

[HorribleSubs] Prince of Stride - Alternative - 12 [1080p].mkv0070

Whoa, surprise ending!

;>_>

If you can’t tell how sarcastic I’m being, then you haven’t read my other reviews. We have finally made it to the end of this anime, the, ahem…End of Summer, to be exact. It’s the time the team, and the main three characters, have been waiting for. But at the last minute of their training, they decide to change the order of the runners. Instead of being the starter, Takeru proposed for Riku to be the anchor. And who’s the anchor of team Kakyoin? Tomoe, of course. Takeru knows that Riku will run his best when running with Tomoe and that it has to be this way. Riku also begs the team to change the order, and they all agree with some hesitancy from Heath. And so then they practice extra harder for the new running order, because they have never practiced with Riku as anchor or in any different order really. So with the competition a couple weeks away, we get what we always get in a sports anime. A training montage! After all that we see the team in the club room, Riku talking about his excitement and nervousness about the race ahead of them, and they’re all pumped up.

It’s then the day of the race arrives. We see past characters again, such as Saisei saying good luck and other stuff. We also see the past teams such as the green team and the shitty pink team, all cheering for Honan. They all take their places and this is the moment when Riku finally confronts his brother properly.

[HorribleSubs] Prince of Stride - Alternative - 12 [1080p].mkv0058The race starts, and while it starts we hear Riku talking to Tomoe about how he pretended to hate Stride but would always skip the bus and run to school, how he met great people in the team, how he’s changed, all the emotions in the sport or something, and all of that. He’s now more confident and is ready to race his brother. He tells Tomoe not to go easy on him, and Tomoe replied that he never went easy on him when running. And…well yeah. I knew that too. It was just Riku’s insecurities getting in the way, Tomoe never did anything wrong. But hey here we are. So Takeru also gets his own monologue talking about how Stride is important to him, especially Riku (and Nana being mentioned a little) because Riku helped him find something he wanted to do in life and….I’ll talk about this later.

It’s finally Riku’s turn to run with Tomoe, and everyone shouts their words of encouragement and stuff and…we don’t even get to see the end of the race. It skips us seeing them at the finish line, and it just jumps back to Nana running to school and playing the same scene from the first episode with the boys jumping the fence and Riku rolling into the tree. The three of them go to the club room where Heath and Ayumu play Shogi, and Kuga’s reading a beginner’s book of the game with Hozumi next to him. Everyone is happy and Nana shouts to make another great day, and they all leave to practice. While they walk out we get a view of a magazine on their table, and then the camera zooms in to the page where it says Honan High School won the End of Summer.

And their story continues…I guess.

Berry’s Final Impression

Prince of Stride: Alternative. I’m still not sure what the Alternative in the title is supposed to mean. That this is an alternative to other sports anime you can watch? Well, I certainly wouldn’t want to watch this again. I mean what happened? Madhouse, why?! After a commercial success from One Punch Man, and also getting good feedback from handling Ore Monogatari (even though I wasn’t a fan, read my reviews here if you haven’t), Madhouse had a pretty good run last year (I was not a fan of Overlord either). But the pain of Prince of Stride being a flop is even more worse when the last thing Madhouse did was One Punch Man, which was insane. I’m a huge fan of Madhouse, as they’ve made a myriad of amazing shows. So Prince of Stride not being good was…disappointing. I had a lot of high hopes for this show and was really excited and was ultimately let down by my favorite studio. What are the problems with this show?

[HorribleSubs] Prince of Stride - Alternative - 12 [1080p].mkv0069Well, Prince of Stride was the adaptation of a visual novel, an otome game. And when people commented telling us that, I was surprised, and I’m still surprised. For the anime they took out the romance and instead focused on the sport. And from other things people have told us, they took little drama things from the game and inserted them in weird spots in the anime, leaving some drama to be talked about once and then that’s it. I guess the plot of this show, like any other sports anime, is win the main tournament. Along the way to reach this goal they’re going to have drama. And the drama was not good, simply put. Sometimes, it was downright laughable. Such as the incident with the Stride club losing popularity in the school because of the incident that took place with Heath and Kuga, and the stupid misunderstanding.

I’ll start with the one good drama. Ayumu, who was reduced to comic relief. He had real problems. He originally the lone member of the Shogi club but was then dragged into the Stride club. He’s not the most athletic, but he’s still good enough to keep up with the others. But he still didn’t feel good enough and thought himself of a nuisance, and when he wanted to prove himself useful to the team, that led to him getting hurt and having to stop running. I thought Ayumu’s problem was handled well, but again I can’t feel for him too much as the focus on him shifted away, so that sucks.

Ayumu’s problem led to the next, with the dumb situation with Kuga. We all know what happened, but we spent like two episodes with all this crap where Riku was the only smart one saying “Hey, who cares? Those mean third years aren’t here anymore, so come back to the team?” All they needed to do was explain what really happened, and then that would be it. But they had to drag everything out, and it was unnecessary and also kind of funny, in a bad way.

Riku’s drama with Tomoe…please. It wasn’t that Tomoe was an awful brother, because he wasn’t. He was actually very kind and sweet, and he always cheered on his little brother and encouraged him. It was just Riku trying to git gud and failing at it.

[HorribleSubs] Prince of Stride - Alternative - 12 [1080p].mkv0061Also, the childhood thing? With Riku, Nana, and Takeru? I’m sorry but it frustrated me. No, I’m not believing that Riku and Nana didn’t recognize each other after only 6 years. They looked exactly the same as children, Nana had the same hairstyle! They…looked…the…same. And like Charibo had said, how could they forget such an important promise such as going to the same high school together and going to the EOS? How did they lose communication with each other since then as they looked to be such close friends? In the final race, Takeru had his own internal monologue, saying things that he promised Riku he’d win. But then all of a sudden he starts talking about how important Riku is to him because he was the one that got him into Stride, he found something he wanted to do because of Riku, he was moved by his serious emotions in his Relation, but you know the problem with everything he said in that moment? HE NEVER SAID ANY OF THIS BEFORE. AND NOT ONCE DID I EVER SEE TAKERU FEEL THAT WAY ABOUT RIKU. He barely said all of this now, in the finale, when he was distant with Riku for a long time. He never showed it! It’s just like the insert song in the show that they play 1000 times in their races says…

YOU GOTTA SHOW ME

Characters were another problem. The characters were flat, dull, boring, uninteresting, you can insert any other synonym of “boring” here. I could not feel for any of them, except maybe Ayumu. I thought Nana was the main character, but the poor girl was ignored. The characters were just so bland that I couldn’t really get attached to any of them, even Heath. Not even Heath could save this show. The dumb drama hurt the characters as well.

Madhouse being known for great animation, it wasn’t shown here. The animation was mediocre at best, and sometimes it looked downright ugly. Sometimes the colors could be a little too bright. I felt like they could have done better with the races, like show us different dynamic angles of their legs, since Stride is a sport that’s all about running. Speaking of Stride…

[HorribleSubs] Prince of Stride - Alternative - 12 [1080p].mkv0002WHAT THE HELL IS STRIDE? I get it’s like an extreme version of track and field, but just what is it? There are things I don’t get about it. The races contain obstacles where the runners can jump over, run off of walls, and other showy things with their parkour. But there doesn’t seem to be a point to it. The thing that I got out of all these 12 episodes is that speed matters because they only counted time. The fastest team wins. But why add obstacles? Such as with hurdle races, you jump the hurdles and cross the finish line. But with Stride, as we saw with Ayumu, you can just skip the obstacles because it’s optional. So why are they there in the first place? If crossing the obstacles were mandatory, then it’d make sense. Or if Stride was about points, and you could only get points from doing something with the obstacles, then okay! But…no, none of that is there. And even though the anime was supposed to focus more on the sport aspect, I thought that they really did fail with this.

I’m done with this show. I’m literally done with this show. Dumb drama, boring characters, confusing sport, lackluster animation, Prince of Stride did not deliver. Not even the A+ cast could save this show. We have Junichi Suwabe, Daisuke Ono, Ryouhei Kimura, the infamous Kana Hanazawa, even more, you have the best of the best here, and the show was still shit. 4/10, it was disappointing. There are other great sports anime you can watch instead of this so I recommend that you don’t bother.

Thanks for keeping up with this show with us!

Charibo’s Final thoughts

7421

You know, sometimes in life you need to stop running away from your problems and need to finally face them once and for all in order to solve them or if you cannot solve them, to burn them with fire. That’s how I feel after watching the last episode of Prince Of stride. I’ve tried to avoid the problem for too long. Thinking that I was the one misunderstanding the show and thinking that “it’ll be okay, things will work out fine in the end”. But it didn’t. I did not work out well in the end. The end of this show left me with the impression of a giant middle finger, telling me: ” Oooh, you’re still here? You really thought it was going to get better? You thought everything will make sense in the end? Ahaahahah you’re so naive child. Fuck you, you’ll get no reward for wasting your time on this show.”

[HorribleSubs] Prince of Stride - Alternative - 12 [1080p].mkv0066

So that’s it. Prince of Stride has finally ended after 12 weeks… 5 hours. This show took 5 hours of my non precious time. And you know what? I’m quite pissed off. I don’t mind spending time watching stuff that I like. HunterxHunter took me 61 hours of my life, I spent 31 hours watching high school guys playing Baseball and I did not even know the rules of baseball at the time. But I don’t regret spending them watching it… But I do regret for Prince of Stride. Why? Because it was bad, so I’m mad. Let’s end this once and for all, I’ll close the POS case and put in in a shelf with lots of locks on it, next to Diabolik Lovers, Boku no Pico, Mars of Destruction and other shit Harem anime cases.

Art: First, I thought it was king of refreshing. The fluo colors everywhere were a bit disturbing for my poor eyes not used to the light, since I live under a rock but after a while I actually thought those colors were kind of nauseating. The animation quality also dropped a lot around the middle of the show. The characters were drawn quickly and faces became derpy. It’s a bishounen show, how can you explain that expect from Heath and Reiji, I don’t find the guys attractive? Well, the art has a lot to play in it… In the end, the guys were closer to some kind of noodles than actual humans. And I’m not so sure about their faces proportions too…

Sound: MEH, MEH and MEH again. I’m not the biggest fan of that kind of music. I don’t even know which kind of music it is… Anyway, the music was here trying to get me pumped for the races but I couldn’t care… The same tracks were used all the time especially the annoying ” You’ve got to show me” one. You know what? Don’t, don’t show me anything. I don’t want to.

[HorribleSubs] Prince of Stride - Alternative - 12 [1080p].mkv0028Story: Ok, so the line is pretty basic but I wasn’t expecting much. It’s a sports anime after all. But here, it’s not working. I don’t know who to blame. Should we blame the Otome game for having a bad story or the anime for making the bad choices regarding the different routes’s adaption? Thing is, Prince of Stride was falling between two stools or like we say in French, it had its “ass between two chairs”. On one side we had the sport aspect and on the other side the Otome/drama part. While the stride part was put before everything else in the first episodes, the anime focused on the Otome/side plot on the last episodes. I found the races not trilling at all. I was bored watching them. It was fun at the beginning but it got boring after a while. To be honest I hate running in general since I don’t see the point but that’s just me. I also hate Ping pong and swimming but I liked watching Free and Ping Pong the animation. Here, the striding part bored me to death. Also like Berry said, what the actual hell is stride? But it’s not like I care now…
Then, the Otome/ drama part… God, that, THAT WAS THE WORST PART. The whole “Kuga hurt Heath” to protect the club left me wondering “Why? Who cares?”, the brother inferiority complex was unnecessary, I grew up to hate Riku during that part, Nana’s father part was just ” ugggn, why?!” and the childhood stuff killed me… NO… Actually I was dead before, but without knowing it… The childhood stuff found my body and stabbed it with a silver fork… I’ve already explained why it was lame and unbelievable in my last review and Berry made a pretty good job summarizing the problem with that part so I’ll just leave it there. Drama= WORST PART

Characters: When you watch a reverse Harem anime you’re kind of expecting the main heroine to be a limp noodle, since you’re supposed to identify with her. I’ve never thought it was a compliment though but that’s not the point. In reverse Harem animes, the attention is actually focused on the guys. So you have to give them nice personalities and stuff otherwise there’ll be nothing left to save in your show. Well, in POS, that’s the case. There’s nothing left to save. Nana is useless and invisible, is she even their friend, I’m not so sure… And the guys are boring too. They are not attractive nor funny. I’ve said that Reiji was the best guy and I still think he’s the best guy of the show but against some other guys from other animes he won’t stand a chance. He’s mostly the best guy because he’s not involved in some shit drama.

Final Note: 4/10

It’s a bit harsh, I know. But I don’t like seeing people shouting everywhere that this anime was good since it wasn’t. Honestly, I think the only target audience for the show was the shipping Yaoi fans… Other than that I don’t see who can enjoy this. It was technically bad, the episodes were poorly written and the characters are just forgettable. Other than being shipping material Prince of Stride was nothing, it was a shittier version of Free. Like, Free: Shit Parkour edition.

Ahh, I want to be slapped by Hinami~!

_re 69 Img005

…Sorry. I want to first address a quick issue that should have been mentioned as part of last week’s post. Depending on which scanlation group’s translation you chose to read, when exactly you read it, and whether you’ve been keeping up with :re-related updates and spoilers over the week, you may or may not already know this. It’s to do with the last page of Chapter 68 – MS offered the full (and correct) translation of that page, while Helvetica missed it completely in their initial release (but later corrected their mistake). It should look like this.

18

It’s done in a style similar to the way Urie talks, in that what Kaneki is telling himself about his own motives is different from what he really means or intends deep down. Taken together with the penultimate few pages, Kaneki’s lines are therefore: “…Hide. I… just like you, I want to die in style.”

Which is just… well, holy shit. In other words, he’s still suicidal. I remember questioning last week whether he admired Hide’s selflessness or just thought it was a good way to die in style, and it looks like I’ve got my answer. Kaneki has confirmed the nature of his ‘last job’ this week as well – he wants to rescue Hinami, then be killed by Arima. He seems so certain that no-one or nothing can stop Arima at all – I know he knows a lot about his abilities having seen them up close many times, but it feels like he’s underestimating his own strength especially in the wake of his victory against Eto. It’s like he has zero self-confidence. Regardless of his strength I guess his objective is to die, but I doubt he’d accept a death where he isn’t going all-out against an opponent he truly can’t defeat – that might not be ‘dying in style’ from his point of view. Also, if he’s saying that Hide died in style, does that mean it’s confirmed that Hide is kill?

At least, we know one scenario which would have satisfied the conditions Kaneki wants to die in – his fight with Arima in V14 as Centipede. I still think we’re going to get Centipede crawling around in Cochlea, whether that’s as a result of Hinami’s death (Ishida don’t you dare) prompting him to go insane or otherwise. Haisaki seems to be suggesting as such – he’s talking about Cochlea being part of his body and vermin running amok while he’s clutching his ears. If that isn’t a subtle reference to Kaneki having gotten a centipede put inside his ear then I don’t know what is.

_re 69 Img004

In other news, Touka is finally doing something! I guess her and Yomo being the gas masks means the theory that Hide was one of them is now debunked. Yomo being around is reassuring, because he’s one of the few ghouls in the series to have faced Arima before and lived – on the other hand, Touka appearing might not be such a great thing. Think about it. It’s both Kirishima siblings in Cochlea, and their father has been exploited by the CCG as a kakuja farm for god knows how many years now. And they’re heading deeper and deeper into Cochlea, where there’s supposedly some sort of exit – I’m pretty sure they’ll be served a dose of Ishida’s brand of suffering at its very best. Speaking of that exit, does it really exist? Given that it’s a prison for ghouls, and that the more dangerous the ghoul, the lower underground they’re held captive, it wouldn’t really make sense for there to be an alternative exit somewhere lower down. Does it have any connection to V? At any rate, Kaneki, Banjou and Ayato all seem convinced that there’s a way of getting out – and I’m sure Banjou and the rest of them aren’t suicidal like Kaneki is, no matter how much they want to rescue Hinami.

_re 69 Img003

I sure hope we’ll be staying at Cochlea instead of moving to Rue Island next week. It was one of my biggest worries for the chapter – that Ishida would try to cover a bit of both every week instead of concentrating on the more interesting one (which is Cochlea for now, at least until Amon, Takizawa, Akira, Houji and Tatara have their high school reunion). Not least of all because Furuta has appeared in front of Hinami and Kaneki, and I’m terrified to say that I have absolutely no idea what Furuta will do. It’s honestly unpredictable. Will there even be a fight? What does V want the outcome of this incident to be? Is he acting on orders of V? If so, will Furuta go along with V’s wishes, or will his personal grudges (against Eto and possibly Rize) be put first, since hurting Kaneki is a sure-fire way to get back at Eto? Was he the one who gave the key card to Ayato, and if so does he want a breakout to happen? If a fight does begin, what’s his true power level? Will they get anywhere before being interrupted by Arima? I can’t tell anything from that creepy Clown smile of his, and all my instincts are telling me is that something very, very bad might happen to Hinami next chapter.

Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2

Team Impression

Eva: Nah, I like shoujo but this does not perk my interest, in fact it’s sparks the opposite.

Vantage: I’m not really into shoujo. The visuals also look slightly dated.

Berry: So it’s about a girl going through puberty? Well it’s certainly unique, I’ll give it that, though I’m not sure it’s something I’d watch.

Nikolita: The story begins with Hanabi, a sixth-grade girl who is neither an adult nor a child.” No, no I’m pretty sure 12 qualifies as a child. I get that the main character’s supposed to be hitting puberty and all that, but a synopsis like that just makes me cringe. Plus the artwork makes them look way younger than 12. CCS anyone?

Charibo: Wait… What?! No… I don’t want to see that… Just.. gnnnnngggnn.. I can’t explain how wrong this thing sounds to me…

Oki: I literally cannot express to you how much this disturbs me as an anime. It doesn’t feel innocent, it feels like the robbery of innocence.

Team Impression

Eva: It is refreshing to see a different club theme for an exchange! I will give it a whirl, but I hardly expect myself to pick it up.

Vantage: If only this was a sports shounen about motorcycle racing. Now that would have been really cool.

Berry: So this sounded cool as shit, just a bunch of girls riding motorcycles all hardcore and shit…but the PV is the complete opposite of what I imagined. Boo.

Nikolita: Huzzah, a summary I haven’t heard before. It’s just too bad I have little interest in motorcycles.

Charibo: Slightly too moe for Charibo, plz put more guys with abs on big huge manly bikes and I’ll probably watch it.

Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2

Team Impression

Eva: This manga series has only started relatively recently, so while there is a lot of hype around it, I would tread cautiously because of how soon it got an adaption.

Vantage: All signs point to this being the ‘next big shounen’. It’s been a long time coming – the last Shounen Jump manga to be adapted was Shokugeki no Soma, and that wasn’t exactly traditional mainstream material not least of all due to the excessive fanservice. This is definitely one to watch next season.

Berry: A lot of hype over this, so I’m keeping my eye out for this.

Nikolita: So kinda like the anime where young girls strive to become idols? No thanks.

Charibo: YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES. I WANT IT!

That man is Dazai Osamu, and he and his partner Kunikida are members of a very special detective agency. They have supernatural powers, and deal with cases that are too dangerous for the police or the military. They’re tracking down a tiger that has appeared in the area recently, around the time Atsushi came to the area. The tiger seems to have a connection to Atsushi, and by the time the case is solved, it is clear that Atsushi’s future will involve much more of Dazai and the rest of the detectives!

Eva: Yesssss, I will definitely be watching this!!!!

Vantage: Bones is quite good with mystery stuff, and I’ve enjoyed a lot of what they’ve put out in recent years. But they also have Boku no Hero Academia next season, and I wonder if they might be stretching their resources a little too thin to accommodate a solid adaptation of both series.

Berry: A lot of hype over this manga too, and reading the synopsis and watching the PV I can see why and this seems right up my alley.

Nikolita: I might watch this.

Charibo: Composed by more guys than girls, mystery and action. DING DONG WE HAVE A WINNER, I’ll watch that. I heard it’s going to be a two court show though… AAAAAHHH I Don’t know if I even want to review it…

Nikolita: YES! I’ll take a look definitely.

Eva: I really like this premise, I can see myself enjoying this show. Not sure if I would be able to write about it though…

Vantage: I fell in love with this when I watched the PV a couple of weeks ago. It looks extremely comfy, and regular injections of this will be exactly what I need to combat my rising stress levels. As ever though, I have no idea whether this is bloggable – and despite how suspiciously clean the animation and character designs seem to be, it’s not reassuring that the Tsukihime director is in charge of this.

Berry: It seems so sweet and relaxing, and it’s about witches! So I’m up for it.

Nikolita: Seems cute. Makes me think of a slightly older Kiki.

Charibo: Like Niko said, this reminds me too much of Kiki’s Delivery Service… Other than that, I have nothing to say about it… Just: Okay? I guess… Why not?

Eva: Welp, I haven’t finished the first season…

Vantage: I won’t make any promises about covering this episodically again, but I’ll definitely be watching it. Maybe an overall review at the end? In retrospect, throwing capital at it before the first season even aired in the form of a Vita game, two seasons and a ton of marketing really wasn’t the right thing for Aniplex to do, no matter how much they thought it was going to be the next SAO. It’s also too bad Miss ‘I’m too good for character songs’ won’t be doing the ED again, Waiting in the Rain was awesome.

Eva: Any objections?

Vantage: I’ve never played the games, but this adaptation will be in good hands with A-1. I also have a suspicion that they’ve romanticized criminal trials just like how Suits is an unrealistic representation of life as an actual commercial lawyer.

Berry: I’ve never trusted anime adaptations of video games because they always turn out horrible, but I’ve always been interested in the Phoenix Wright series. Never played the games, so I’m hoping this will be good.

Berry: I think most girls have imagined themselves as mermaids. Even if in this case they won’t be actual mermaids. This looks cute though, will watch.

Nikolita: A cute summary. I wish I liked anime featuring kids more, because that alone is usually enough to make me uninterested even if the plot sounds somewhat decent.

Eva: Hahahahaha, I know better this is something I am better off avoiding. *SHUDDERS*

Vantage: I feel like that entire synopsis is actually an extended metaphor for something dark and depressing. Okada Mari will have a field day with this. Also Charibo, something tells me not all 30 of them will survive the show.

Berry: God this sounds so good! This is one show I’m excited for.

Nikolita: I’d cover it but others beat me to it, so I’ll probably stick to just watching it.

Charibo: I’m a sucker for my mystery and psychological thriller plus, this one has a “huis clos” touch to it. However, how to handle 30 characters…. It can be good or it can be bad. Let’s check this out.

Oki: This sounds like it has the potential to be one of the better obscure anime in the upcoming future.

Eva: Odd show, but hahahahaha it sounds entertainning. I’ll watch this.

Vantage: If only the production values weren’t so sub-par, I might have had more of an interest in this. Though which studio would sink money into a premise like that? Except DEEN, and that’d be because they’d cut corners to save costs

Berry: Not being able to tell the difference between reality and the online world sounds really troubling. And why does it make me scared seeing “correct” her like that? D:

Nikolita: I agree with Berry. What an odd show. o.o

Charibo: No. No, no, no and no again

Eva: White Fox’s recent works have been a hit or miss. I’ll give this show a shot, but I’m not expecting much out of it due to how generic it sounds right now.

Vantage: If no-one cares, I’d be more than happy to take this. It feels generic, and I know White Fox messed up with Utawarerumono, but uh the main girl is really cute. Also it has some strong names attached to it, including Takahashi Rie (the fabulous Megumin), Arai Satomi and Minase Inori. All personal favourites. And Konomi Suzuki for the OP is always quality.

Berry: People seem excited for this but ehhhh…I don’t know.

Nikolita: Ever seen Puella Magi Madoka Magica? Yeah, this looks like that and that didn’t end very well. (But the movies are awesome!)

It’s an amazing manga, and if DEEN can carry their momentum from the massive upset they created this season into the next, I can actually see them succeeding with this.

Berry: This sounds hilarious.

Nikolita: The synopsis is the biggest turnoff ever.

Website: http://cerberus-anime.jp/
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Magic
Airing Date: April, 2016
Summary: The anime is set in a continent ruled by sword and magic called Kunaaan, where a power balance between the Holy Kingdom of Amoria, the Kingdom of Ishilfen, and the Vanrodis Kingdom keeps a peace so unstable that any tragedy that befalls any one kingdom will mean war for the entire continent. Another power, the evil dragon Daganzord, also resides on the continent, and no one is powerful enough to stop him from spreading destruction and charred land in his wake. Two individuals, Bairo and Kismitete, undertook a ritual alongside a party of wizards to seal Daganzord, but were foiled. This event was known thereafter as the Balbagoa Tragedy. Bairo and Kismitete’s son Hiiro is saved by Giiru, and Hiiro swears to avenge his parents’ deaths and trains himself with the sword. When Hiiro turns 16, he sets out on a journey to slay the dragon, and Giruu accompanies him, having no choice. Along the way, they meet many types of people, and gain companions on their journey.

Nikolita: Sounds like a generic fantasy with a smidge of Smaug mixed in. No thanks!

Charibo: After reading the summary I have a headache. Why does it have to be so long when you can narrow it down to: Guy with sword do magical bullshit with gurls with boobs and DRAGONS!

Oki: but the REAL journey was the journey they made along the journey and I’m so sick of adventures.

Nikolita: I’m so glad to see I’m not the only one completely fucking creeped out by the synopsis and concept. I’d love to cover a shounen-ai show, BUT NOT WHEN ONE OF THE PERSONS INVOLVED IS A GODDAMN MINOR. Even without a specified age, he’s clearly still a kid and there’s the whole abuse of power thing going on. Ugh, just no.

Charibo: I’d rather watch Boku no Pico… again. That old guy’s hand is waaaaay too low on the child’s body. Plus, he has this kind of look that’s shouting ” Yeah, I know what I plan to do is bad, but I know you like it u filthy Fujoshi”. That’s a hell no for me thx bai.

Overall Thoughts

Eva: Considering how many titles are airing in this season alone, I am very surprised how few of the titles are pulling me in this season. From the surface, the season feels a bit bland to me with the exception of the handful of potientially strong titles the hype is revolving around. Right now Bungou Stray Dogs, Joker Game, Kiznaiver, Macross Delta are the ones I have my sights set on. But on the otherhand, I am not entirely sure if they are titles I will be up to covering, depends on how it plays out. I will be going into this season with low expectations and but otherwise, I might only pick up one or two shows.

Vantage: A huge season, but it feels like quantity over quality so far. I’m pleased that there’s lots of slice-of-life shows and CGDCT, the best of which will probably be Flying Witch and Hai-Furi. I’d be most interested in picking those two up, although rest assured I will be watching as many of them as I can. As for the powerhouse shows, watch out for Boku no Hero Academia, Mayoiga and maybe Kiznaiver, as well as Sakamoto desu ga? being a surprise favourite (although it won’t be much of a surprise when all the manga readers start singing its praises in the run-up to its first episode). I’ll actually be even more busy next season than I have been this season, so I will continue my recent trend of not blogging as much as I used to – I know I signed up for quite a few, but realistically I’ll only really be after Re:Zero and Kuromukuro (for some strange masochistic reason) if we assume Flying Witch and them lot aren’t bloggable, although we might actually get a plot out of one or two of them. I should have more breathing space in the summer season, just in time for Rewrite!

Berry: There’s A LOT of heavy hitters this season. All in all, I think this season looks fantastic. Because, um, Jojo. Duh. Also there’s a lot of big names here that all look really good, with other stuff that also look like they could be great. I would have signed myself up for more shows, but I’ve been noticing that my school work has been getting more hectic and reviewing shows have been a little tough so I think I’m going to cut back. I still have Assassination Classroom as a leftover, and I know the shows I’m going to review this season for sure are Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable and Show by Rock!! Season 2. I really would like to review Bungou Stray Dogs, Mayoiga, and Magi, but I’m not too sure. I could at least pick up one more show than the three I’m planning. But even though I don’t think I’m going to be reviewing too many shows, I know I’m going to be watching a lot of shows here. Hoping Spring season will deliver!

Nikolita: I was surprised with how many shows caught my attention this season. There’s nothing that I’m falling over excited for (that’ll be summer season), but Endride look especially interesting. I also still have Nijiiro Days with Charibo, so I’m hoping that picking up another short won’t be too heavy a review schedule for me. I’m excited to see how the spring season will pan out!

Charibo: Oh well, there’s so many interesting shows this season! Aside from the usual moe/ magic ecchi school battle shit I think I will probably watch everything. However, I do not have a lot of time on my hands this season because of finals, yeeeeeeeeeh. But I think I ‘ll review Boku Hero no Academia and Koutetsujou no Kabaneri for sure and like Nico said, I still have Nijiiro Days with her. Mayoiga comes in third position, I’m a sucker for mysteries. So that’s probably the last show that I will cover this season… But there’s Sakamoto desu ga too… aaaaaaaaaahnnnn… He’s too fabulous too miss… DAMMIT U SCHOOL!

Oki: This season is probably the most interesting in terms of potential! There are so many good things to look at and to be invested in. Unfortunately given that this season falls in the final month of my semester it means I will be contenting with finals. What this means is I can only continue to cover the shows that are incredibly high interest are very good to me, otherwise I risk being unable to continue reviewing. Here’s hoping the best shows get some proper coverage!

I think some were even afraid that Arima would covertly move up her execution date so that Kaneki wouldn’t get any funny ideas. But it’s all okay now. Onii-chan will protect her smile! In retrospect, I can kind of understand why Kaneki stopped visiting. For one, it wouldn’t make much of a difference. It’s not like he goes to her cell every time he visits her – he had no idea where it was, meaning she was probably brought out to some sort of interrogation room instead whenever he questioned her. He also no longer has any excuse for visiting her, since being scheduled for disposal is tantamount to the CCG saying she has no more useful information left keeping her alive for. As a non-employee of Cochlea, the only opportunity he had left to get anywhere near it was during this mission – and so he simply waited until he had the best chance of successfully breaking her out.

The key issue now is whether and how Kaneki and Hinami will make it out alive. Ishida is cruel to cute girls, after all. I feel really sorry for Ayato, having gone to all this trouble to break into Cochlea only to have Kaneki make it to Hinami first – and now while they make their getaway Rabbit is stuck fighting Arima.

_re 68 Img005

If even Shachi couldn’t scratch him I doubt Ayato and Banjou will be able to do much – their survival will probably depend on whether Kaneki or maybe Amon come to their rescue. It’s also a little disappointing that Kaneki doesn’t seem to be intent on releasing any more ghouls from their cells – he’s only done all the A-rate ghouls, and even then only as a distraction to keep the guards busy while he heads down to the SS-rate floor to look for Hinami. It would have been good if he released Donato and Eto at the same time, but it’s nice that he’s giving priority to best girl. It’s quite clear that at least someone will die, and I’m sorry to say that (although I like them both) I’d trade Eto’s life for Hinami’s in a heartbeat. I think Kaneki would do the same.

Come to think of it, Eto can probably break out on her own if she eats the slabs of Shiono that Furuta made for her. Furuta is definitely really really bitter about the Washuu comment. It seems like he’s doing everything he can to get back at her short of actually physically harming her – which includes revealing that he knew about the wiretapping as well as killing Shiono and making her eat him. Poor Eto. I remember wondering a couple of months ago whether Eto actually cared for Shiono, and I think I have my answer – she does. Or did, anyway. Furuta may have still been very clever this chapter, but I don’t think his actions were as effective as some of the stuff he’s done in the past – because those seemed like it was effortless control of the situation on this part. Now that he’s been unsettled once by Eto, it just feels like he’s having to try especially hard to hurt her, and it comes off as a little forced. He’s still good at acting and lying, though.

As for Hide – Kaneki really is an unreliable narrator, especially when he’s Centipede. If you look back at Chapter 136, which was the chapter in which Hide appeared in the sewers (incidentally, as as a number that would be a double of this week’s Chapter 68) you’ll notice that he in fact says absolutely nothing about Kaneki eating him or Arima being dangerous and Kaneki having to prove to Arima that he’s worth keeping alive. If Kaneki was told to eat him, and Kaneki woke up and tasted blood in his mouth before the V14 fight, I think Hide really is dead – as much as I don’t want to believe it, because I do think Hide has an important role to play in the series. I’m an advocate of the ‘Hide is a Washuu’ theory, after all – and it’s suspicious to me that he knows so much about how dangerous Arima is and the possibility that Arima will want to keep Kaneki and turn him into an investigator instead of killing him outright. Now that we know there are disowned Washuus like Furuta, it’s looking more likely that Hide had or has something to do with either the Washuus or V. Of course, Kaneki could have just eaten a bit of Hide, and like with Amon and Takizawa we haven’t seen a body – so hope still remains. He could have just sacrificed his arm.

_re 68 Img002

Lastly, I also wonder whether Kaneki really wants to be just like Hide. I’m really happy he thinks Hinami is someone worth risking his life for, but is he doing it because he thinks Hide is admirable? Or is he ultimately just doing it because doing something for someone else’s sake is a way to die in style?

_re 67 Img002I’ve got a bit of preamble this week. I’m writing this after having waited for MS to release their version of the chapter, but in retrospect I liked Helvetica a lot more. Putting aside the fact that they were a lot faster, it feels more like a literal translation cleaned up in order to make grammatical and stylistic sense, which is exactly what I’m after from a scanlation group. Just like IS used to do, MS takes a lot of liberties with the way they translate – and honestly it feels more like a localisation than a fan translation at times, which annoys the purist within me. Some lines are aesthetic decisions, and I can accept that. Others have clearly been localised, with Matsuri telling Urie to ‘cleanse the beach’ in Helvetica becoming ‘make this beach pretty again’ when translated by MS. On occasion it even causes confusion, because Kaneki telling himself ‘I just need to do my job’ (MS) has an entirely different implication to ‘I will do what I need’ (Helvetica). I don’t know what the original sentence said, but MS has implied that Kaneki will be defending Cochlea. It’ll be interesting to see how the scanlation scene for this series develops now that MS has started to face some competition in recent weeks.

Anyway. And here I was thinking last week’s chapter was already intense! I didn’t realize at first that this is essentially what we’ve been waiting for this entire time – not Centipede crawling inside Cochlea (definitely not coincidentally a part of the inner ear canal, need I mention) but rather Kaneki’s inner thoughts as Kaneki. All this time we’ve only seen him from an external perspective, and this chapter was the first time we’ve been able to properly get into his conscious thoughts and into his head – well, we don’t hear his thoughts, but his actions this week speak volumes and are more than representative of his mindset. And what a mess it is.

_re 67 Img005

He’s been acting stoic and emotionless this entire time, but the very moment he’s alone he then does something I never thought the current Kaneki would do, just like how I thought he’d never smile – he curls up on the floor and fucking cries and shakes, telling himself that he has to do what he needs. Holy shit. And mixed in with my shock is quite a bit of confusion too, because I don’t know what Kaneki’s feeling and I have a suspicion that he’s not quite sure himself. Is it fear, at having to fight Arima? Is it guilt, over having to betray Arima? As Haise, his memories start from when Arima was kind to him – when Arima gave him books, company and helped him with his name (the derivative kanji interestingly being ‘coffee world’ put together, which I assume is a reference to Anteiku). But now that he’s Kaneki again, he’s also remembered the time when he was still himself, when Arima gouged out his eyes, walked into his cell and told him that all his friends were dead, because he killed them all like a heartless bastard. I guess Koma and Irimi really aren’t coming back, huh.

1457219523

You know, I didn’t realize Number 240 was Kaneki at first – I thought he was looking in a current prisoner, and it took me a panel or so of thinking he looked a lot like post-Aogiri Kaneki before it suddenly dawned on me that it was Kaneki. After all, I was under the impression that his time as Haise started right after Arima gouged out his eyes – I thought it was the damage inflicted during that V14 battle which was responsible for his amnesia. So it’s interesting that he actually grew back his eyes (before clawing them out himself every night), still had his memories and was in the same unstable mental condition he had at the end of the original manga until the shock of learning everyone was dead suppressed his Kaneki personality. Haise was born at that moment. I wonder what they would have done if Kaneki had stayed mentally deranged the entire time – were they counting on him developing amnesia? By the way, ‘oedipism’ as a medical term means ‘serious self-inflicted eye injury’. And in Greek mythology Oedipus stabs out his own eyes. He also kills his own father, the king, and wins his throne. I hope you see where I’m going with this.

Even if we put aside the Oedipus analogy I think it’s quite obvious that Kaneki is planning to turn traitor. And this internal turmoil has led to an emotional breakdown, because at the same time he’s formed attachments within the CCG – which do include his relationship with Arima, and with the Qs like we saw last week. He hasn’t become cold and emotionless, he’s just gotten a lot better at pretending he has. I don’t know whether doing what he ‘needs’ involves breaking prisoners out of Cochlea, but a direct conflict with Arima is almost unavoidable at this point. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s feeling both guilt and fear, because now he remembers the V14 fight and how powerless he was even at what was then his best. What’s more perplexing is Arima himself – what does he think of Haise? How would he react if Kaneki betrayed him? Does he feel anything for Haise beyond perceiving him as an autonomous quinque? Haise thanked him with all his heart when he got his new name, and Arima just… looks at him. What is that supposed to mean? What the fuck does that face mean, Arima?

_re 67 Img001

No matter what Kaneki plans to do within Cochlea, it clearly wasn’t him who set off the alarm. He looks shocked in that last panel. It also wasn’t Ayato, he hadn’t yet done anything when the alarm went off (who knows where he even got a Cochlea key card) meaning that most likely intruder is Amon. Hopefully with Kuro. As hyped up as the Cochlea side of things is getting, Ishida will probably go back to the Rue Island stuff so he can drag the suspense out of a couple more weeks – it’d be just like him to do something like that. As exciting as the Qs now are and the Houji match-ups will be (as well as some Ui redemption scenes, given that it only took him three pages into the raid to kill some ghouls this time!) I think we’re all more looking forward to Kaneki and Amon instead. Hinami, just wait a little longer okay? Onii-chan’s coming for you!

Tokyo Ghoul:re Chapter 66: Old Guard

“Kill the One-Eyed King.”

_re 66 Img001

Impression

I’m writing this having not yet read today’s chapter. I know, I know. It was hard for me too, you know? I refused to read it so that I could write this up whilst completely unbiased. For me, the first thing that came to mind was how the flashback at the end of Kaneki’s fight with Arima at V14 now makes a lot more sense.

“I saw it. On that night, at the end of Rize’s gaze, a Clown was laughing.
…In hindsight, I don’t know what meaning that held. Since I’m already–“

f013

Now we know perfectly well what meaning that held. Not only is it confirmed (to no-one’s surprise) that Furuta is Souta, but we now know that Rize and Furuta were childhood friends – and that Rize recognised that Clown mask as belonging to her acquaintance from the Sunlit Garden. All that we’re still unsure of is Furuta’s motive. Did he do it on orders of V in an attempt to dispose of Rize? Or, as a lot of people think, was Furuta in love with Rize? A popular theory is that Furuta got jealous after being cucked by Kaneki, and decided to spite Rize by seriously injuring her and turning her into a kakuhou farm to be exploited by Kanou. Eto asked him whether it had something to do with V, but Furuta replied it had something to do with personal complications – so this theory about him failing to win the semen demon of his desires could be quite plausible. In relation to that, the fact that Rize is from the Garden now confirms that that Garden is analogous to V. It was uncertain before, as all we knew was that it was somehow related to CCG recruitment and that the V members Arima and Furuta also happened to have come from the Garden. But if a ghoul like Rize was also ‘bred’ there (implying that the Garden, with all its Adam and Eve connotations, is essentially a eugenics breeding ground) and she came from V, the only logical conclusion now is that the Garden is V. It would mean that Hairu would also be from V, but she certainly had the same ridiculous reflexes and dodging ability that Arima and Furuta have. At any rate, she’s too dead for that to matter, right Ishida?

_re 66 Img004

I’ve come to really like Eto. It’s like she’s in cahoots with Kaneki at this point. I love how she just casually tells him to just knock for her if he wants to visit, like they’re neighbours or something.

_re 66 Img005

She’s sharing lots of free info with him, and even getting him to plant recording devices in her cell for his benefit – Kaneki must have learned a lot from that alone, not least of all the fact that Furuta is in V and that Furuta was responsible for making him the star of his very own tragedy to begin with. Most of all, Eto has done something that no other character in the series has yet managed to do – get one up over Furuta. All this time he’s been portrayed as an infallible mastermind, right from when he first killed Matsumae – he’s affiliated with so many different factions from Aogiri and the Clowns to the Ghoul Restaurant, the CCG and V. It’s like he’s been in control of everything this entire time. What Eto did was to knock him down a peg or two, and reveal that he’s not perfect – he has weaknesses like everyone else (except Arima) and it’s that he’s supposed to be a Washuu. I don’t know whether this means the Washuus are all from the Sunlit Garden too, but it seems as if Furuta is Yoshitoki’s disowned son or something. It’d make him Matsuri’s brother, but for reasons yet unknown Furuta has not been accorded the status of a Washuu. And he’s incredibly bitter about it. I felt all warm and fuzzy inside when Eto destroyed him. Maybe if I wasn’t already devoted to Hinami I might have fallen for her then.

_re 66 Img003

Speaking of Hinami, we now have a designated rescue squad for her – consisting of Ayato, Banjou and Amon! Or is Amon not with them? I mean, I’m happy to see him back (hopefully with Kuro) but it would be a little odd if he’s opted to work not only with Aogiri, but also in pursuit of Hinami instead of on Rue Island. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t want to confront the majority of his former colleagues? He might be after Donato in Cochlea, and Ayato could want to try freeing Arata too if he’s still alive. I think we have enough going on at Rue to make things exciting even without Amon being there – Tatara vs Houji is being hyped up for example, as is Takizawa vs Houji and perhaps Akira fitting somewhere in there. At Cochlea we might get a re-match for Kaneki vs Ayato and perhaps even Kaneki vs Arima, depending on how he chooses to act when confronted by them.

_re 66 Img006

The only other thing I wanted to mention was the One-Eyed King. Why exactly does Eto want Kaneki to kill the OEK? Wasn’t her final book supposed to rally all the ghouls under this figurehead to revolutionise society? I feel like I don’t understand the slightest thing about the OEK, just like Furuta. If it’s ‘in their bellies’ as Eto says, does that mean the belly of the CCG or V? Does that mean it’s Arima? I know it’s becoming increasingly clear that he’s not entirely human, and if he’s blind in one eye it’ll be a symbolic title for him and all that – but wasn’t Arima aligned with V? It’s probably not Kaneki purely because Eto is asking Kaneki to kill whoever it is, unless it’s some deep philosophical notion about Kaneki killing a personality within himself or something stupid like that. I really don’t think it’s Kaneki. Who are we left with, though? Amon? Hide?
