Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu – Episodes 10-12 [Final Impression]

Episode 10

It’s New Year’s, and Ryo, Rumi and Toshiaki have gone to a shrine to pray and make wishes for the new year. Ryo and Rumi share their wishes with Toshiaki, but he refuses to share his because he says he heard that if you tell someone your wish then it won’t come true.

Later they run into Keiichi, his childhood friend Reiji, and Reiji’s younger sister Yukari. Rumi is thrilled to see that Yukari is a “real priestess” and insists on taking pictures of the young woman in her shrine attire. Toshiaki and Ryo think Rumi’s reaction is funny, but when Toshiaki sees that Keiichi isn’t at all amused by Rumi’s behaviour, he scolds himself for “falling so far” and becoming so used to Rumi and Ryo’s world that he can apparently no longer just what is normal and what’s not.

Keiichi and Reiji invite the trio inside for some New Year’s soup, and we see that there’s some attraction between Keiichi and Yukari. However Reiji insists on getting in the way, much to their annoyance.

Sitting around a table, Rumi and Yukari discuss spending money on New Year’s goodie bags, bags with a random assortment of items inside. Neither girl really likes the bags, but Yukari confesses that she buys them anyways every year. Rumi’s inner monologue then inisists if she’s going to buy items with a hit-and-miss value, she’d rather buy and trade BL prints.

Later as they’re walking home, Ryo discovers that he’s pretty broke. Toshiaki teases him by saying people often buy a lot of things around New Year’s, but Ryo says that he and Rumi are often broke at other times because they spend a lot of money on thin volumes of doujinshi.

Episode 11

The series jumps forward to Valentine’s Day, and Ryo tells Toshiaki that he’s too busy shipping his BL OTP to have a girlfriend. He opens his shoe locker to find no love notes waiting for him, but wait, Toshiaki has one!

Ryo and Toshiaki go to the meeting place described in the letter, and a cute girl named Miyuki is waiting for Toshiaki. Ryo jokes that just because she presents as female doesn’t mean she won’t have a penis, and honestly this episode is worth it for the still shot of Miyuki with a “secret” censor over her crotch. Toshiaki is not pleased with the joke, but he knows he just has to go for it and find out what this girl wants.

Toshiaki approaches Miyuki, who presents him with a really elaborate hair accessory. She tells him she loves making them, and she’s always thought he had beautiful hair so she wanted to make something for him. And honestly this girl is talented – the hair accessory is gorgeous!

Ryo recounts the story for Rumi later, and she gives him some chocolate she found him at a convenience store. It’s got some artwork on it from an anime Ryo likes, and he’s super excited that she was able to find it for him because he hadn’t been able to find it.

Ryo asks Rumi if she gave anyone chocolates for Valentine’s Day, and Rumi confesses that she gave them to her favourite BL character, even though she knows the chocolate will of course go instead to the series mangaka.

Toshiaki watches the two of them gabbing and he muses to himself that he doesn’t know why they aren’t dating yet. They have a lot in common and many of the same interests, so what’s missing?

Episode 12

Ryo tells Toshiaki that he’s thinking of getting a part-time job. Toshiaki is suspicious of there being BL-related motivations for the decision, and in a way he’s a not wrong: Ryo wants a job so he has spending money for the next Comima convention.

Just then Daigo sticks his head into the conversation and asks if Ryo would be willing to help him out by working for him as an assistant at the event. Ryo knows that Daigo is connected to one of the authors he really likes, plus he needs the money, so he agrees to help out.

At the convention, Ryo is struck by the differences between himself and Daigo. They’re both fudanshi, but Ryo feels that Daigo is much more popular with females and is a little jealous. However Daigo points out that Ryo was getting his share of attention from the ladies too, and sure enough, them being together at a stand selling BL doujinshi has drawn some attention. Ryo is absolutely horrified but Daigo encourages him to play up the perceived attraction for sales.vlcsnap-00014

Just then Rumi arrives to snap a picture of Daigo with his arm around Rumi, and she teases them by saying maybe they should share one of the drinks she brought them instead of having one each.

After the event is over they go out for a drink together. Daigo asks Ryo how he got into BL, and Ryo says that in his first year of high school, he found a fan-created manga anthology for a series he liked which had BL content in it. He initially wasn’t into it, but realized the material was pretty good and the genre grew on him from there.

Ryo asks Rumi how she got into liking BL, and she says that both her mom and older sister are fujoshi too, so it was natural that she became one as well. Daigo teases Ryo by saying that he is Ryo’s kindred spirit, but Ryo’s not impressed.

Afterwards Rumi and Ryo leave together and bump into Toshiaki. He asks that they’re doing, and they tell him they are back from Comima and are going to check out some new volumes of BL. Toshiaki comments that they’re on a date together, but Rumi and Ryo both deny the remark.

My thoughts: For an episodic series about a topic not covered much in anime, Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu isn’t terrible. I was hoping for a little more with the last episode, ie something which would end the series on a nice note, but it was still just as episodic as the other episodes. It was nice to see how Ryo and Rumi got into BL, and I guess that will have to do for a “series finale” episode.

I did also wonder why Ryo and Rumi aren’t dating. I don’t know if there’s enough manga content for a second season, but I got the impression that there’s the potential for that to happen if Fudanshi were to get another season or two. They definitely get along very well and have a lot of the same interests in common, and their personalities seem to compliment each other.

Final Impression

Story: Fudanshi doesn’t have much of an overall story. Rather because it’s an episodic series, the series revolves around themes like Ryo going to Comima, meeting new people who like BL, and the differences between Ryo and “normal” people like Toshiaki who aren’t into BL. More than anything I think this series is about exploring BL subculture, and in that aspect it succeeds with flying colors. I knew nothing about BL or the boys love genre, and I’ve finished this series feeling like I at least have a basic understanding of it now.

I had started the season hoping that Fudanshi would push the envelope a little in terms of which topics it addressed, and I feel like the back half of the season was more successful in that regard. In particular the episodes about cross-dressing were somewhat tastefully done and not used to harass individuals who do cross-dress, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender.

But there’s still a long way to go. There’s still the stigma around being gay or individuals who present as being homosexual. Yujiro was somewhat of an exception, vlcsnap-00003as his feminine behaviours were accepted by his peers, but other characters including Ryo just could not stop themselves from seeing two guys together in the flesh as being “wrong.” There’s also the problem of groping/sexual harassment still being used for comedic purposes too.

Characters: Some of the characters are a little flat and one-note. Ryo for example is pretty straightforward, but he’s all about BL, all the time. Rumi is much the same, as adorable as she is. They’re cute and funny, but they’re boring.

That being said, I did like that Ryo and Rumi were such extreme fans of BL because some of their reactions and the terms they threw around (shipping, having an OTP, etc) were totally relatable to me (and presumably many other fans of anime and nerd culture as well).

My favourite character was Toshiaki, and I wish we’d had more episodes focusing on him. As a non-fudanshi he was the “normal” character of our main trio, and I was a little sad that he always seemed relegated to the role of being the supportive best friend.

Music and Animation: The animation was pretty meh, pretty average. Nothing super special. The still panels which were often used to convey reactions or capture expressions were well done and very detailed, but any animation which conveyed movement was nothing special in my book.

The music was alright too. Again nothing special, nothing that really stood out as being exceptional. The ending theme did grow on me and I eventually found it to be a little catchy, though it’s far from being my favourite theme.

Overall: If you want a cute series about a topic that’s often ignored in mainstream animation, then this might be the series for you. Just don’t go into it expecting anything mindblowing or above average. I’ll be watching to see if Fudanshi gets a second season, but I don’t think I’ll blog it if there is one.

Final Score: 7/10

Amaama to Inazuma Episode 12: With Affection (Final Impression)

Nothing’s better than food filled with love.

Here we have the finale of this delightful little show. We get treated to the same types of episodes we’ve been getting for 90% of the show. I thought the show would play a little differently, as in the first minute we see Sensei and Tsumugi wearing black clothes. We don’t see Tsumugi’s face, Kouhei’s has a somber expression, and he carries Tsumugi at the train station as she hides her face in his shoulder. We find out from Kotori’s memory, as she spotted him with Shinobu, that it’s been a year that his wife died. So in the show’s terms, six months have passed since the start of the first episode.

horriblesubs-amaama-to-inazuma-12-1080p-mkv0016I say that I thought the show would play differently because of that scene, but we didn’t get anything out of it. We immediately went to the quick conflict of the show. I really wish they had focused on the grave visiting, and the topic of Tsumugi’s mother in general, but…damn. But what we do know now is that for sure Tsumugi knows that her mother is dead. I’m not sure when she figured it out. I’m going to guess it was when she had said “Mommy’s not coming back” at the end of the curry episode. I think it was then that she knew that her mother was gone for too long and that she had an idea what was really going on. But it surprises me that she never made a bigger deal of it. Because in the first episode, it sounded like Tsumugi thought her mom was out on a long trip. But now she really does know that her mother died. I just thought we would see a scene where Tsumugi would be questioning everything, and we would see how she would come to the realization. Or did she always know? I really don’t know.

horriblesubs-amaama-to-inazuma-12-1080p-mkv0056Because Tsumugi mentioned other character’s mothers, and how she was so excited to meet Kotori’s mother, I thought she would bring up her own mother. That’s one of the things that this show did that frustrated me a little bit. They would tease about Tsumugi’s mother at times, where you would think that you would be treated to some really good scenes, but they never would take it any further. The closest we ever got was the curry episode, which was wonderful, but not enough for me. I still want to know just how close Tsumugi was with her mom, and I wanted to see how they lived with her around, compared to how they are now.

Tsumugi makes a fuss at the okonomiyaki place, being upset that she couldn’t make her own food like her father had told her. Screaming and crying, it was an awkward dinner, and Kouhei didn’t really handle it all well. But the lesson Tsumugi learned was that she needed to be scolded. When she and her father, and Kotori, and Yagi, and Shinobu all got together to make homemade okonomiyaki, Tsumugi got scolded by Yagi when she kicked his bowl of cabbage. Tsumugi, like any other child, or any person in general, doesn’t like being scolded. She got mad at her father because she scolded him at the restaurant. She tells him her friend’s moms are different about scolding, but Kouhei makes it very clear to her later: Whenever she does something bad, she needs to be scolded. He doesn’t like scolding her, but he’ll do it when she needs to be scolded.

Kouhei is a great father, you can tell that she loves Tsumugi dearly, but I did always think that he was a little too easy on her. Like with the whole bell pepper thing? My parents wouldn’t let me leave unless I ate everything. But maybe that’s because I grew up with strict parents, haha.

horriblesubs-amaama-to-inazuma-12-1080p-mkv0040Either way, everything ended happily. I was happy for Kotori. We finally got to hear her thoughts about how she felt about her mother. Her mother had told her that she actually had some free time and that she finally wanted to meet with Sensei and cook with all of them. Everyone was excited to meet her (especially Yagi), but when they got there Kotori said that her mother had to suddenly go to work…again. Kotori was disappointed, and she told Kouhei that it felt like she didn’t matter to her mother. Kouhei gives his own thoughts, saying that it’s the opposite. She does care for her, and she just doesn’t want her daughter to worry that she cares so much. Luckily, Kotori’s mother actually does come in the end, and it’s all happy and warm in the kitchen.

With all the love and affection put into every dish her father makes, Tsumugi is happy to eat everything. And that’s where it all ends here.

Final Impression

This episode didn’t feel like a finale. It just felt like any other episode we’ve had, but the actual show just…ends. I know it’s because the manga isn’t even done yet, but they could have done a little something with the episode to give a sense of finality.

This was a good show, it was fun to watch. There are goods, and there are bads. Let me start with the bads.

horriblesubs-amaama-to-inazuma-12-1080p-mkv0034After a certain time, the same formula became repetitive and a little boring. I did like to see the foods they made, and how detailed they were with the cooking. But seeing them cook and then eat got a little bland after awhile. I wish they had done some things different, like maybe them failing a dish completely maybe? During the cooking segments, there were little moments with Tsumugi that would entertain us, such as her singing and dancing and other cute quirks. And don’t get me wrong, Tsumugi is a little ray of sunshine and just the sweetest little thing, but…it was starting to get a little old. I think someone had commented that they were worried that Tsumugi’s little antics would stop being cute after awhile and just be annoying, and I understand what they meant. They weren’t annoying, but they weren’t as cute to me anymore, but I did get a good laugh when Yagi and Shinobu ended up laughing at her. She’s a darling, she’s so cute…but cute can only take you so far.

Plot had good and bad moments, but characters did as well. We never got to find out why Kotori was deathly afraid of knives. Maybe it was something simple that she just cut herself as a kid, and…well, everyone reacts to trauma differently, and ever since she got this phobia. But I feel we don’t know enough about Kotori as a character. She was in every episode but I still feel like we don’t know enough. The same goes to Yagi and Shinobu. Yagi just shows up sometimes, but he’s never the center of attention. We know a tiny bit of general information about Shinobu, but nothing more. The fault goes to the repetitive formula of the show, as we never got the time to really focus on these characters.

horriblesubs-amaama-to-inazuma-12-1080p-mkv0045The characters that got the most screentime and development were Kouhei and Tsumugi. Kouhei has grown into a more aware father, as he still is getting used to the single parent lifestyle. He began to really pay attention to Tsumugi’s life, like her little problems at school, and the little stain on her school bag. Tsumugi of course is growing, as she’s only a kid, and kids always learn new things everyday. And this is where the good parts of the show starts. I absolutely love what this show did. We see both father and daughter helping each other out, learning together, sharing memories together. They have one of the best parent/child relationships I’ve seen in anime. We see very real situations and conflicts in this show, like the finale’s lesson of scolding, or other things like Tsumugi having trouble with her friends, other problems at school, leaving home by herself, and the main thing which was cooking actual meals for Tsumugi. Tsumugi feels real because she’s depicted so realistically in this show. She acts just like a kid, like she should. And the struggles Kouhei faces being a busy single parent is real, and I’m so happy with how everything was handled. Sometimes he would have trouble figuring out Tsumugi’s troubles, and sometimes he didn’t know what to do and he got frustrated, but the two of them have such a strong bond, everything was all written well! They both are learning new things, and they’re learning them together, happy together.

While the characters weren’t really developed, I did enjoy them around anyways. They made a fun dynamic in the kitchen or just in the episode itself. Yagi’s friendship with Kouhei, and Shinobu acting like a big sister towards Tsumugi, it all felt so nice. It was also nice seeing Tsumugi interact with her friends and the children in her school, which is another thing the show did so well with. So bravo.

Art and animation were pretty average. I wasn’t too fond of the OP theme, but the ED theme was nice. I have to say that Tsumugi’s little seiyuu did a splendid job. Sometimes her voice got a little too squeaky, but…she’s a child voice actress. She’s got plenty of time to perfect her voice. The OST was cute, not too memorable. The art was fine, though I noticed it got worse progressively with the show. The art style fits the cuteness of the show, though I can’t get over how weird Kotori’s mother’s face is. :/

horriblesubs-amaama-to-inazuma-12-1080p-mkv0060All in all, Amaama to Inazuma is a pretty enjoyable show. I criticize it, but I think I’m being fair, though you can disagree if you want. Or maybe these kinds of shows aren’t for me? I did like watching it every week, I was just having trouble blogging it. There are its ups and downs, but it has something really special. It has these sweet characters with strong bonds that make you smile and feel warm. It’s cute, it’s fun, it’s funny, and just plain sweet! Depending who you are, it might get a little boring to you after awhile. But this is in no way a bad show. Even though I had my problems with it, I would still definitely recommend this show, because I just love how they represent the single parent lifestyle, with its pleasant moments, and its struggles. So I give this show a solid 7/10.

I would like it if this show would get another season, but if it follows the same formula, then I’d have to think twice about blogging it. Either way, I’d like more. Bye bye, Tsumugi-chan!

Berserk (2016) – Episode 12 [Those Who Cling, Those Who Struggle] [Final Impression]

Final episode… T_T

Nina’s still alive, unfortunately. She landed on a covered pallet of some kind, and she’s hurt her ankle. Feeling sorry for herself she manages to hobble into the middle of the road and fall over, and is nearly stampeded to death by panicking refugees, except that Luca appears at the last possible moment and throws them both out of the way. Behind the wave of refugees are more of the blob spirits, and Nina can’t run with her injured ankle, so Luca stuffs her into a barrel and tells her to be quiet until everything passes.

vlcsnap-00017As she’s trapped in the barrel and being knocked around every which way, Nina begins panicking and then coughing up blood. She realizes that when she’s the most afraid is also when she feels the most alive. Nina resolves to try her best to continue living, for both Luca and for herself.

Atop one of the lower gateways, Guts and the others are attempting to hold off the purple gelatinous-looking spirits with their torches, but they are in danger of being overrun by them. Puck explains that the spirits are the manifestations of the pain and resentment felt by those who died at the tower, and are being fed by the negative emotions held by the people they’ve been engulfing.

Farnese is having a hard time processing what she’s seeing. At one point she’s about to resort to prayer, until some harsh words from Guts bring her to her senses. With Guts facing one way, Farnese and Serpico attempt to watch his back with their torches.

Suddenly the massive army of spirits converge on the tower and swarm up its sides towards the five fingers outstretched towards the sky. Their weight is too heavy and the tower itself actually starts to snap and crack, but the merged forms of the spirits hold it somewhat together.

A monologue from the Egg of the World overlaid with shots of the God Hand implies that the long-awaited reincarnation ceremony is finally starting to take place. The thoughts of the living and the dead are converging into a single point, which will result in the birth of the White Hawk Griffith and a whole new world.

Both Guts and Casca are feeling the agony from the spirits through their brand. As the ceremony reaches its pinacle, the spirits vomit what looks like blood and the tower finally collapses into rubble. As it falls, we get a brief glimpse at an unnamed female witch and her fairy companion.

Day breaks, and Guts and the others have made it through the night in one piece, including Nina in her barrel and Luca who hid in a well. However they are not out of the woods yet: the Kushan have arrived! Their leader commands that their forces attack and capture Farnese and the others, including the Black Swordsman.

Just then Azan shows up to help out. It looks like all of the other Holy Iron Chain Knights didn’t survive, as Azan is alone. As he prepares to join the battle, Zodd vlcsnap-00033the Immortal bursts through the rubble. Guts is initially unsure of why Zodd is there, but as he strides towards a figure in the distance, everything becomes crystal clear: Griffith has been reborn, and he is now Zodd’s master.

While Guts understands the significance of this turn in events, the Kushan do not, and they do not hesitate to launch an attack against Griffith. Guts is about to join them when he stops suddenly. He has Casca to protect; he can’t abandon her again, not after he made a promise to keep her safe.

Azan leads Luca, Farnese and the others away from the ruins, but Guts and Casca remain behind. As the main Kushan forces arrive at what’s left of the tower, Isidoro and Jerome spot Guts and Casca riding away from the battlefield on horseback. Meanwhile a nude Griffith soars away into the distance on Zodd’s back.

It turns out there are a handful of other surviving refugees who made it through the night as well. Luca picks a little bouquet of flowers and throws it into the wind, saying it was for a poor lonely soul who never met anyone. It’s a nice gesture for such a pitiful creature. Isidoro takes off on his own, and Nina momentarily excuses herself from the group.

Down by the water Nina runs into Joachim, who claims to really care for her and apologizes for ratting her out. He turns to leave but Nina stops him; she decides to leave with Joachim, for they are two similar souls, and they depart without saying goodbye to Luca or the others.

Farnese also has a major revelation: she decides to leave the Order to follow Guts. His strength and ability to stand alone in the darkness have captivated her for reasons she can’t yet define, but she will follow him at her own pace, and Serpico will of course be with her.

As the credits roll, Luca, Jerome and the other working girls are still waiting for Nina, who has fucked off with Joachim. The Skull Knight sits atop his horse on top of a cliff, watching down through the clouds at this new world below.

And elsewhere as night falls, Guts, Casca and Puck make their way through a forest. Guts and Casca are finally together again, but what new adventures await them?

My thoughts:
As a story arc, I thought that this episode was a little anti-climactic. The Conviction arc basically builds up towards the ceremony which results in the birth of a new world (which is elaborated on later in the manga) and Griffith’s reincarnation, but the ceremony itself was actually pretty short. And we barely got to see or hear the God Hand either. I feel like this last episode could have spanned two episodes and included a little more content.

That being said, what we did get to see of the reborn Griffith was pretty awesome, I just wish there had been more of it. He had an almost magical girl-like reveal, what with his long white hair flowing behind him and feathers everywhere.

I’m super excited that we’re getting another season in the spring 2017 season, and I am hoping that I’ll be covering that arc as well. We’ll get to meet a new cast of characters, including the green-haired forest witch and the fairy whom we got our first look at this episode.

I’m stalling the inevitable, so I guess without further ado, here’s my final impression for Berserk (2016).

From what I remember of the Conviction arc in the manga, this season was a pretty faithful adaption of the source material. I can’t fault the story just because I don’t like the arc, so the story gets full points from me. We’re also still early enough in the series that events are not getting super repetitive yet, which is good because that’s definitely one thing I am critical of later on.

Characters: Again full points from me. With the exception of Casca, pretty much everyone experiences some kind of personal growth and development during this arc. For example, Farnese changes from being a devoted leader within the Order to someone who openly questions and later discards her religious beliefs. Guts goes from being on a personal quest to destroy all Apostles (and by extension Griffith) to someone who realizes he must protect what is most important to him: Casca. Even Isidoro goes from being a cocky kid who’s most concerned about Guts training him to someone who learns about the notion of personal responsibility and fixing one’s mistakes.

There are some characters who do not experience a lot of growth or have much of their backstory revealed (such as Serpico or Azan) who will get their turn in later arcs, so I can’t discard any points for that.

vlcsnap-00046I’d also like to point out that I feel that Casca’s seiyuu, Toa Yukinari, does a fantastic job voicing a character who has literally no dialogue in the entire season. In all episodes she appears in, Casca communicates with only grunts and cries, and it’s left to the other characters to determine her wants and needs based primarily on her body language and tone of voice. That can’t have been an easy role to voice, but I think Yukinari-san pulled it off well.

Lastly Nina needs to go DIAF. Holy fuck what a whiny, useless, annoying character. She is perhaps the only character who has virtually no growth, because what little she gains in the final episode is offset by her desire to avoid hating herself. I knew she would not die during this arc because she doesn’t die in the manga, but that didn’t stop me from hoping that maybe the producers had made a couple changes here or there and that her death would be one of them.

Music & Animation: The music is top notch, and I am still thrilled that Hirasawa-san returned to compose more music for Berserk. I have my fingers crossed that the Blu-ray release of Berserk (2016) will include the official soundtrack. Tracks like “Hai Yo” really add to the dark, demonic fantasy world which Guts and Casca inhabit, and the music for this series is include any other anime music I’ve heard before. The opening theme is fucking awesome, gets me really amped up to watch the show, and the ending theme is just beautiful.

This blend of 2D and 3D animation is not my preferred style; I personally would have rather seen Berserk (2016) done in a more traditional style (as with the original 1997 TV series), or in the method used for the Golden Age film trilogy. Granted there are some scenes which the CG doesn’t warp, but for larger scenes with lots of characters such as group shots or battles with demons, the CG blend doesn’t do Berserk (2016) any favors. Characters’ movements often seem clunky or slow, and the CG lacks the smoothness of 2D animation.

What I did enjoy about the animation in Berserk (2016) were the close-ups, because those shots used more 2D than 3D animation, given them a more “traditional” look. I also really enjoyed the colored still at the end of each episode shown right before the “To Be Continued” screen.

Overall thoughts: Honestly I’m in love with everything about this season except the animation. It’s a little hard to tell from the brief preview we got at the endvlcsnap-00001-2 of this episode, but it looks like the next season might be done in the same CG style, so if that’s the case I will be bitching less about the animation the next time around. Like many other fans while I’m not big on this style of blended 2D & 3D animation, I was so excited to learn that us Berserk fans were getting a new adaption, and so I’m just grateful for the new seasons.

I’ve had a few people question over the last few months why I’m such a big fan of Berserk, because I normally hate anything from the horror genre and I try to avoid blood and gore (I’m squeamish). But like with many other shows, I don’t watch for the violence or the blood – I watch for the characters and their relationships more than anything. And the music. Always for the music.

Berserk is a dark fantasy, but it’s the growth shown by Guts that intrigues me more than anything, and the devotion he shows to Casca which draws me in. He and Casca only have one intimate encounter, but the relationship he has with Casca is powerful enough that it alters his entire psyche. He’s willing to give up his quest to kill Femto, give up his mission to kill the Apostles just to protect her. Not only that but as we’ll see in the next season (and hopefully later arcs too!), Guts will go to extreme lengths to help try to restore Casca’s mental state.

In parting, here are my final songs from Susumu Hirasawa for you. They are Inferno and Meimoku no Kanata, the opening and closing themes from Berserk (2016), respectively. Thank you to those who’ve read my entries for Berserk (2016), and I hope you will join me when I (hopefully) blog the next season in the spring. ^_^v

Final Score: 9/10

Show By Rock!! Short!! Episodes 11+12 (Final Impression)

Time for Season 2!

I don’t think I should bother much talking about each episode, since there isn’t much to say about either of them. Episode 11 was about an American egg teaching Criticrista about all those disgustingly cutesy poses, but Rosia ended up being the teacher since she’s basically an expert in all of that. The last episode was a TV show the bands got together to do where Rom transfers to a delinquent school, and he and Shuzo were about to fight, but that’s where it ends. In the end Plasmagica thanks everyone for the support and tells everyone to watch season 2, with is just going to start in a couple weeks. Exciting!

Final Impression

horriblesubs-show-by-rock-short-12-1080p-mkv0015What can I say, really? These series of shorts were just there to tide us over until the second season would start. These shorts showed the bands in sometimes their own leisurely time, we would see them on TV shows, commercials, and we would also learn their origins. These shorts were just little pieces of fun for us, to have us see our favorite characters again, but this time being goofy the entire time. It was short, fun, and just plain nice to watch. It was something to pass the time, since the episodes were only 3 minutes. I can’t really expect too much from a short series, like I said, they were for fun, but I wish they could have been a weensy bit longer. And more Plasmagica. These girls literally only had one episode, and that little bit in the end. So that was a little disappointing.

Animation? Same as first season. The only new piece of music we got was Plasmagica’s new single “Do-re-mi-fa PARTY!”, which was used as the ending theme. It’s a really cute song, and I heard a slightly longer version when I played the song in the game. It’s just plain cute, which is what I expect from this band, so I really liked it.

Literally, the only people that would watch this are Show By Rock fans, no one else. This is for the fans. So if you enjoyed the first season, marathon this little bit quick before the second season starts. You could probably finish all the episodes in…a little over half an hour. So you could pick any free day you got to sit down and watch.

Did this show do anything entirely new? No. But, we did get to learn a little bit more about some characters, and it was fun to see them do other stuff that didn’t have to do with Battle of the Bands or anything, like appearing on TV and commercials. But this show didn’t take it to another level, as they were only 3 minutes. So…yeah. It was fun to pass the time, I love this series, so I had fun watching this. 7/10. Would I recommend this? If you’re a Show By Rock fan, then yes. Now, we wait for the second season, which I’m pumped for! ^o^

Also, this has nothing to do with the anime, but I had to delete the game off of my phone because I had no space left for other things. I’m sad, my Chokiyurui UR is gone. :'( I hope we see some bands from the game in the second season. Bands I would love to see are:

  • Dolly Dolci
  • Chammy Chaplets
  • Alice Beans
  • Rapezziauto
  • Spectrenotes
  • Bud Virgin Logic
  • Arcareafact

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Episode 25: That’s All This Story Is About [Final Impression]

It’s over!

re_zero-25-img003Huh. It’s over. Is that really all this story is about? I’m actually quite surprised – that felt like a fairly standard ending, in that everyone’s smiles were protected and everything went perfectly. It was so standard that I didn’t expect it at all, because the way this show has worked up until now is that it pretends everything is okay before stabbing you in the back and shoving you off a cliff, replacing a safety mat you see at the bottom that’s supposed to break your fall with extra-sharp spikes just to get another laugh before you die a gruesome, despair-filled death. I was almost expecting hell, and to not get it makes the ending a little underwhelming. I have no idea whether it was anime-original or not, but I wouldn’t put it past White Fox to go down that route given what they did with Underwater Ray Romano a couple of seasons ago. Time to finally read the web novel, I suppose.

re_zero-25-img012An example of things going wrong would have been the bag of magic stones exploding and grievously wounding Emilia and the children, but it just ended up being one of those added complications that pop up during the later stages of an arc to add extra suspense, a bit like what happened near the end of the mansion arc. Stuff like that usually fails to add any suspense at all, purely because from a technical perspective the series is about to conclude and you’re not supposed to do cruel stuff because a happy ending is the norm. The difference is that Re:Zero has spent the last six months doing exactly that, with the result being that the first time I didn’t expect a happy ending was the first time we actually got one.

I loved the Satella scene, though! She’s the cutest. I was under the impression that she wouldn’t really interfere with Subaru other than in the event that he gets killed (i.e. in the absence of his physical death, she won’t intervene no matter how much suffering he goes through or even if the consciousness controlling his body isn’t his any longer) but I guess she wasn’t really happy with Betelgeuse being there instead when she arrived to take advantage of her chance to lewdly caress Subaru.

re_zero-25-img007I’m also now reconsidering whether there’s any merit to the Satella-Emilia theory. It’s the first time she’s spoken, and if I’m not wrong that voice should be Takahashi Rie’s. At least, it sounded awfully similar to her. It’s most likely intentional if so, but I don’t know whether it’s bait worth taking. Both are silver-haired half-elves, for a start. And it just doesn’t make sense for an all-powerful, supposedly evil (but kind of cute) witch to unconditionally love a random human to the point of summoning him from another world and making sure he stays alive at all costs. One way of explaining it would be the love that Subaru feels for Emilia, right? Even if Satella isn’t Emilia from the future, I really doubt that the two aren’t related whatsoever. We have no idea whether Satella really wants to take over Emilia’s body (she clearly gives no fucks about the cult that worships her) but if she does, there are probably reasons as to why she can’t do so just yet (or she’d have done it by now) and why it has to be Emilia. Because if I were her, I’d just take over Reinhard and she would literally be set for life. Unless Reinhard has some sort of blessing that prevents him from being taken over by qt yandere witches, which he probably does.

Overall Thoughts

re_zero-25-img009I’m actually surprisingly mellow about Re:Zero ending. I don’t really feel much. I’m not sure whether it’s just my mood today or otherwise, but I don’t feel that hollow feeling I usually get when a two-cour series comes to an end. Next Sunday will be my first Sunday in six months where I’ll have no Re:Zero to watch, and for some reason the current me is okay with that. It’s strange, because it’s definitely a successful anime given how popular it is – if there’s anything that’s turning (or has turned) semi-mainstream from this season without being shounen, something like what Tokyo Ghoul or Kiseijuu or Kimiuso did in their respective seasons, this’ll be it. It’s just that the ending sort of petered out in a way that’s not really definitive of what the series has been all about up until that point. I’m not saying everyone should have died, but this show wouldn’t be the same without the suffering. It wouldn’t have been as emotionally heart-wrenching without it, and so an ending without any plot twists was weaker than it could have been, as nice as it is to see Subaru actually smiling. At the end of the day, I could have predicted everything that ended up happening this evening with complete accuracy, and that’s not what I’ve come to expect from Re:Zero. It was such an orthodox ending that it was unorthodox, in other words. Truly slothful.

re_zero-25-img005It’ll get a second season though. I’m almost certain of that. White Fox has produced many sequels before, unlike studios like P.A. Works who are traditionally very sequel-averse (although with Uchouten Kazoku 2 announced this morning, that trend has now been broken). I also hear that the author wants to animate all of what he’s written, and that’s a good sign. It’s most likely popular enough, both in Japan and in the West to turn over a hefty profit, and in the end that’s what’s most important. This author seems to absolutely love Emilia though, for some strange reason – she has a pretty face and a kind heart, but her lack of development leaves me unable to sympathise all that much. Hopefully that’ll change in future arcs – her single most memorable moment for me was that first lap pillow where Subaru cried his heart out (come to think of it, that’s probably the precise moment he fell in love with her, if there ever was one). Other than that, I’ve ended up taking a lot more interest in the other girls, from Rem to Beatrice and even Satella. Rem wins a whole case of trophies for having the best moments by far. Episodes 15 and 18 are what will leave an impression on me in the years to come, trailed only by the White Whale battle.

At it’s core, Re:Zero has only been as successful as it has because of its plot twists and its suffering. It’s not so much a successful example of the isekai genre as it is a supernatural fantasy that just happens to involve isekai, because the fact that Subaru has been summoned to a different world has hardly been a focus at all relative to him encountering and resolving his many personal and emotional struggles. Seeing him tackle those ups and downs is what’s made it so satisfying.

Finally, Rem is objectively best girl.

How many years has it been now?
We are soon to kick off our 7th year running!

Eva: Never watched it.

Vantage: I remember this! Never watched it though.

Berry: Heard it’s a sweet show, but I don’t feel like watching it.

Nikolita: This show continues to be a big no for me.

Charibo: Nope and I did not watch the first season.

Oki: The issue with shows like this is it is both thought provoking and uncomfortable. You see someone grow, but as a woman myself this was an awkward time for me and it definitely gives me unwanted feelings of nostalgia

Summary: Tei Kiriyama is a 17-year-old boy who recently started living alone, financed by his salary as a professional Shogi player. Despite his independence, however, he’s yet to mature emotionally, and his problems continue to haunt him in his daily life. His relationship with his adoptive family is strained, and he has difficulties interacting with his fellow high school students. Meanwhile, his professional career has entered a slump. Burdened with the heavy expectations placed on him as the fifth to become pro in middle school, his wins and losses are fluctuating as his record and progression into the ranks begin to stagnate. Acquainted with Rei are the three Kawamoto sisters: Akari, Hinata, and Momo. Unlike Rei, they live happily in their modest home, which they warmly welcome Rei into as if he were one of their own. Despite his reservations about becoming too close to the family, he frequently visits, interacting with them and receiving the kind of care and affection he never quite had while under his foster home. This is the story of Rei’s triumphs and failures, relationships new and old, and his growth as a person.

Eva: Let’s be real how can be NOT be hyped about this? I can’t wait to watch this!

Vantage: I know this manga has an excellent reputation, and that SHAFT was generally lauded as a great choice for the adaptation. Really looking forward to it!

Berry: I don’t know anything about Shogi, but this show looks lovely.

Nikolita: Pass. However it gets props from me for being a somewhat original show idea. Looks great too!

Charibo: I don’t know, maybe?

Oki: It definitely sounds very moving, but I don’t think I can particularly adjust to the kind of show focusing on a protagonist with such a demanding form of independence who also does not know how to be independent.

Vantage: Did the first season of this ever make it out of Netflix? Just like with Sinbad no Bouken, if you don’t have a subscription, then don’t count on actually watching this until the season’s over.

Berry: Ahh…Ajin. I covered the first season, and I did like it, but I don’t think I’m going to cover this. There’s other sequels this season for me to tackle and I don’t want to overwhelm myself.

Nikolita: Berserk was like the sole horror anime I’d ever voluntarily watch. Therefore pass on this one.

Charibo: The Opening of the first season was good… and that’s probably the only thing that was good…

Oki: I have issues with its style of animation and I don’t care to watch the entire first season in time to cover this.

Summary: In rugby, there is no ace striker, there is no number four batter, so who is the star of the team?
The story begins at school entrance ceremony of Kanagawa High School where Kenji Gion, a small but gutsy go-getter joins the rugby club. He joins with his classmate, Iwashimizu, who has a complicated past and sub-captain Hachiouji, who always takes good care of his Club members. Lastly, there is Captain Sekizan, who has overwhelming powers but keeps his cards close to his chest. With such differences in both personality and physical performance, the team must learn to work and grow together so they can become the best.
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2

Eva: Rudby eh? I might watch it since it’s a different sport adaption. I am always open to more variety!

Vantage: A rugby anime? I can’t say I’m much of a fan, but I might try this for the sheer novelty. Also Madhouse.

Berry: Rugby is not a thing here in the States. I’m sure people play it…somewhere. But we have American Football which is the popular thing that looks like rugby? So yeah obviously I know nothing about rugby, but sports anime…so I have to watch this.

Nikolita: Ha, I didn’t think much of the poster until I read Charibo’s comment and now I can’t unsee it. But yeah, it’s a sports anime so pass.

Charibo: DAT ASS! Sorry to sound so thirty but it’s the thing that stands out the most in this visual. They literally put it at the center of the picture so that was intentional. I’m not a huge fan of rugby but because my family, friends and basically my whole town is crazy about rugby I grew up to like it. Heck, I even played rugby for a bit, so I’ll watch the show, for the rugby and for those leg muscles.

Oki: I really enjoyed Eyeshield 21 so there is a chance I’ll check this out, but I am slightly allergic to sports.

Eva: Not feeling this one.

Vantage: I didn’t know there existed a gag manga that discussed Fermat’s Last Theorem. I might try watching this if it’s sufficiently entertaining.

Berry: I love books and reading but…uhhhh…

Nikolita: Maybe? It’s about books and it’s supposed to be funny, so there’s potential.

Charibo: My uncle is named Bernard… I’m only interested in the Tale of Heike. Fermat’s last theorem and Guns, Germs and Steel? Not so much.

Oki: I just can’t. Things this cute make me disinterested.

Though sometimes they must cooperate with each other, there is a great rivalry between the two types. Nikolita: I’ve graduated post-secondary already, so the last thing I want to do is watch an anime about taking exams in school. *shudder*

Charibo: Sounds like a Survival type of show… I like the idea, but I don’t want this to be another Big Order, where everything sounded cool to me, until I watched the first episodes…

Berry: So Beethoven isn’t deaf in this? Anyway…I’m not sure what to make of this. Playing violin in high school I grew a giant love for these iconic composers. But…to see them all goofy like this is weird. I don’t know if I’ll watch this, I’m on the fence.

Nikolita: Reminds me of a Professor Layton game. Really neat idea but as much as I love music, I don’t think it’s for me.

Eva: The PV perked my interest, so I will probably watch at least a few episodes.

Berry: I’ll admit that I don’t like the art style too much, but this show actually looks really cool. Cute with flashy colors, but it looks like it’s going to get serious and I’m ALL for that. I love magical girl shows with a bit of darkness. :’)

Nikolita: I’m always on the fence with magical girl shows. I like shows from that genre such as Sailor Moon and Puella Magi Madoka Magica, but I tend to stay away from the really kiddy ones. Guess what kind of a vibe this one gives me.

Team Impression

Eva: Raise of hands for those who thought PV 1 was an Eng Dub PV.

Vantage: I found some time this week to watch the extra episode that aired recently, and fell in love with Hibike! Euphonium all over again. Lesbian schoolgirls aside, it’s fucking beautiful, and I’m thrilled to bits that Kyoani have decided to throw more money at it. I’d be insane to not want to continue covering it, and may Natsuki-senpai continue to be best girl.

Berry: THE PV IS SO STUPID LMAO. Ah, but this show was only okay for me. I didn’t think it was such a big deal, so I don’t know if I’ll watch the sequel.

Nikolita: Lots of second seasons this… season. Anyways, pass.

Charibo: I don’t care about this show, at all…

Oki: Vantage take the shooow, take it from our haaaaaaands~

Team Impression

Eva: It looks like a mix of Love Live, Macross’ Idols (with the outfits transformations) and others. I am bummed out to see the performances in CGI though… But I will probably take a look at this one.

Berry: Well hot damn I sure do love me some idols! Of course I’m going to check this out.

Nikolita: It’s a pass on any idol show for me.

Charibo: I don’t like female idols…

Oki: I see your idols and raise you a buttload of what the hell is that outfit anyway?

Eva: Apparently this show is super popular, but it never interested me. Maybe I should try again????

Vantage: Is this still going on?

Berry: I’ve only heard the opening song for this show and that shit is fire. Too bad I hate the designs.

Nikolita: Surprise, I haven’t seen any of the earlier seasons for this show either.

Will Nozomi be able to compete in the intense world of “Keijo” and bring wealth and fortune for her family?
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2

Team Impression

Eva: … No.

Vantage: Even I have standards. And was it necessary to have so many exclamation marks?

Berry: Everything was perfectly fine until it said they had to push each other off with their butts and boobs. I’m begging you…please. Why can’t we have a female sports anime with no fanservice? Why can’t we have a serious female sports anime? Why can’t you be progressive, Japan? Seeing shit like this honestly makes me so sad.

Nikolita: Charibo said it best in that I would pay to see such a moment too, but I also agree with what Berry said. As a woman, I feel like it would be awesome to have at least one or two genuine female sports anime where the show’s premise is not a joke or an excuse for fanservice.

Charibo: ” They are only allowed to use their butt or breast to push the other off”. The perverted mind of some people always impresses me. I’d pay to see the moment where the guy announced his genius idea to the rest of the team.

Oki: Look there are two people in this blog who deal with fanservice. It’s me and Vantage. We like these kinds of shows and have weird issues, at least I do. But sometimes Jesus tells you no and this is the time.

She hires the services of a local company, Chryse Guard Security (CGS), to escort her on the journey to Earth to negotiate economic conditions with the earthly bloc that controls the region. The Third Army Division–consisting of Mikazuki Augus, Orga Itsuka, and many other child soldiers–are chosen to protect her.

When Gjallarhorn attacks the CGS facilities to assassinate the young revolutionary threatening their interests, Orga and his comrades must not let the attackers accomplish their goal–in fact, Gjallarhorn’s actions might turn out to be the unintentional catalyst that leads the children to be the forgers of their own destiny.

Eva: I am NOT ready for this season. It’s going to be a heartbreaker that’s for sure. And I’m pretty sure all my favourites who survived the first season are going to definitely die in this one. ;_____; Other than that, the PV music is absolutely gorgeous.

Vantage: I should watch this at some point. Kudelia a cute.

Berry: Ahhh, no. I actually tried watching it but to no avail.

Nikolita: Not a Gundam fan.

Charibo: I haven’t watched a single Gundam show… I should probably at least watch one Gundam show… but it won’t be this one.

Team Impression

Eva: Yeah this sounds similar to Natsume Yuujinchou. This is going to have a tough time competing with Natsume Yuujinchou since it’s airing its 5th season this season too.

Vantage: Is this a poor man’s Natsume Yuujinchou? Not that I’ve watched or read that either, even though I really should have by now.

Berry: Not sure about this one, looks cute.

Nikolita: Seems like every season there’s at least one show involving youkai.

Eva: I will definitely watch this one, but I won’t cover it. I just hope they will focus more on the sport than you know, fluff.

Vantage: I’m pretty sure this is a CGDCT. In which case, it sounds perfect.

Berry: This show looks more tame, but I’m afraid it’ll be more of a “cute girls doing cute things” show than an actual sports anime because PFFT GIRLS CAN’T BE SERIOUS ABOUT SPORTS, THAT’S NOT CUTE. RIGHT? RIGHT…Japan…you fucks…

Nikolita: Not my thing, but another neat idea for a show. Yay for new ideas!

Charibo: So it’s like Yowamushi Pedal with girls? MEH.

Vantage: I loved the shock ending to the first season, but thought the second season fell flat. I’ll definitely be watching this, although it’s not something I’d be interested in blogging (not least of all because I have a feeling it’ll be doused in a generous helping of the Funimation hardsubs from hell).

Berry: WHY MUST MORE GIRLS SUFFER?! But hey it looks like guys are going to get involved too. WIXOSS is amazing, and considering I blogged one of the seasons, I feel obligated to cover this as well.

Eva: I ought to be watching more Studio DEEN shows now days. Been a while.

Vantage: Wait, is the werewolf a cute girl? I’m going to try this out for the bants, and also because I’ve started unironically looking forward to anything Studio DEEN churns out these days. It’s called the Konosuba effect.

Berry: I don’t think I’ve seen much werewolves in anime? Could be good.

Nikolita: While some supernatural creatures interest me, werewolves have never been one of them. Maybe I’m too picky?

Vantage: Why, Sunrise? Why?

Berry: Look, more idols for me! But lol there’s probably not going to be any romance.

Nikolita: Ohhh a romantic musical harem? Say it isn’t so! (I also wholeheartedly echo Eva’s sentiments!)

Charibo: I like that sleepy white hair guy, he’s my type of 2D animu bishounen. Aside from that I have no objections to make, it’ll be like Uta no Prince-sama but with a different cast so why not guys… why not. Also, please no romance, romance makes me cringe.

Might spook me too much! *Sparkly Eyes at Yenpress* You will bring this over, right? SUPPORT ALL LIGHT NOVEL LICENSES!!!!!!!

Vantage: Making magical girls suffer is the new black.

Berry: Premise sounds great but the cutesy art style throws me off. Still, I’ll check it out.

Nikolita: It’s like magical girls in the world of the Hunger Games. This is not the magical girl show I’m looking for.

Charibo: Sorry, Magical girl isn’t really my cup of tea but if they actually kill each other and suffer a lot, I’ll watch it. But I want this to be bloody, make it rain.

In order to get her simple life back, she goes on a task to exorcise evil spirits.
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2

Eva: Well it’s an original series, which White Fox seems to be awfully better at considering their recent miserable track record.

Vantage: It’s something unusual from White Fox, but I don’t blame them. Gochiusa gives them the credentials to do anything involving cute girls, and after working on the sheer despair and suffering of Re:Zero for six months, I’d also want to stay as far away from anything dark as I possibly can.

Berry: Wow, another magical girl show! This one seems cute and unique so I’ll watch this one too.

Nikolita: Another magical girl show?

Charibo: I can feel my soul leaving my earthly body. Release me from the paiiiin.

Eva: I don’t think I will be into this.

Vantage: No thanks.

Berry: Hmm…I’m not sure if I can get into this. But a wrestling anime itself is interesting to see, I just don’t like wrestling.

Nikolita: Wrestling? Pass.

Charibo: Is it a remake of the 1969 version? I’m going to check this one out… only because the original is 100 episodes long.

Oki: I don’t really dig the style.

The Bokan Mecha will be able to transform and combine. The villains in the story include Bimajo, Tsubuyakki, and Suzukki, who are employed by History Paradise, the world’s largest textbook company, to keep history as it was written in the textbooks.

Eva: The what franchise? This is the first I have heard of it.

Vantage: I’d rather not.

Berry: The what?

Nikolita: Neat concept, but no thanks.

Charibo: Mecha, Mecha, no.

Oki: I dislike what they have done to history already. How is a comedy duo more interesting than freakin Cleopatra????

Team Impression

Eva: I am not too sure about this one… I am perplexed alright.

Vantage: I can predict, with almost complete accuracy (unless another Konosuba pulls off an upset) that this will top all sales charts for the season, zura. If there’s a franchise with as rabid a fanbase as Kancolle has (albeit female) it is Touken Ranbu. In fact, this is basically a gender-swapped version of Kancolle. I shit you not, I haven’t the least desire to watch this but girls in Japan love this so much that money will be growing on trees at Doga Kobo for the next three months, zura. Speaking of which, Kancolle second season when?

Berry: All I know about Touken Ranbu is that the boys are cute and that this series is popular as hell so that means I need to see this!

Nikolita: So we have two shows about changing history this season.

Charibo: I don’t know this… but this is kinda interesting…

Oki: I feel very. . .conflicted? Vantage is right but the premise seems strange.

Eva: Not feeling this one.

Vantage: I liked Ranpo Kitan (at least everything up to its last arc) so I might try this out if I have the time.

Berry: This one looks really cool! I’m not sure whether I’ll cover this one though.

Nikolita: Pass!

Charibo: Akechi must be, after Holmes the most over-used detective ever. I’ve never read an actual Ranpo Edogawa book but I think I’ll do this, instead of watching the show.

Oki: the art, the art though, I can’t tell if it’s good or bad and what even is this?!

Vantage: I still haven’t Amaama to Inazuma, but this looks kind of similar. How much fantasy will there be though?

Berry: This looks so sweet! Like Eva, I’ll probably cry. T_T

Nikolita: Is the boy an orphan or something? It looks cute but pass.

Charibo: Another single parent x cute girl show? Oh boy… sure it looks cute, but I’m not really interested in cute girls. Give me muscles, where are the muscles?

Oki: I think I will pass, it looks adorable but it’s not necessarily my cup of tea.

Eva: … After the bullshit of “Season 3” (it doesn’t even deserve to be considered a season, it should have been a bunch of OVAs) I am at my last straw with Utapri. They have three episodes to convince me this series is worth my time, so they better hit the ground running and pick up right where we left off. Do not waste any time on pointless introductions, WE KNOW THE GOD DAMN CHARACTERS AND THEIR PERSONALITIES, WE DON’T NEED AN ENTIRE FIRST EPISODE (NOT EVEN HALF!!!) DEVOTED TO THAT FOR A FOURTH TIME. I SWEAR TO GOD, I WILL FLIP IF THAT DO THAT AGAIN! God damn it, I just want this season to be good.

Vantage: Why is this allowed?

Nikolita: Haven’t seen anything from this series, no interest.

Charibo: Again? Another one? Oh okay, guess they want to exploit the Uta no Prince-sama franchise as long as they can. But anyway it’s cool to see Red hair happy guy and Blond Shota again. I forgot their names… sorry.

Charibo: Looks to me like a shoujo wanting to be different from all the other ones but who’s going to end up generic as well. I’ll see how it turns out but I’m a bit skeptical. Overall Thoughts

Eva: (Got bored of my color, decided to switch it up!) Ah time flies by so fast, it’s autumn already! I never pictured fall to be a musical season, but boy there are quite a bit of music shows going on. Music and Idol Lovers will be digging what this season has to offer, but alas let’s up they actually deliver- you know, THE ROMANCE (if it’s included in the genre). Other than that there are a couple of heart-warming shows that will probably make me cry, like 3-Gatsu no Lion and Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari! I am looking forward to Shuumatsu no Izetta, continueing Gundam Tekketsu S2 (frankly speaking: I AM NOT READY FOR THIS) and am slightly dreading Utapri S4. I told myself I won’t waste any time with this series anymore if they don’t pick up exactly where they left off. Overall the season doesn’t look too shabby, but it certainly feels like a lacklustre conclusion to the 2016 season.

Vantage: Fall feels kind of underwhelming this year. Maybe it’s because there seem to be more sports-oriented stuff and series catering to fujoshis than there normally are. Heavyweights to watch out for include Shuumatsu no Izetta, Sangatsu no Lion and the long-awaited sequel to Hibike! Euphonium, as well as maybe Occultic;Nine if it lives up to its pedigree. Fune wo Amu potentially feels like a sleeper hit too. Both Re:Zero and Rewrite will be ending, so I’ll have the capacity to blog all three of Hibike! Euphonium, ViViD Strike! and Brave Witches, none of which should be surprising picks (and all three have ostensibly yuri elements, come to think of it). If time allows, I’ll try out Luger Code 1951 as well. Let’s see how things go.

Berry: Aaahaha…I signed up for a lot of shows, and I still have Jojo. A lot of magical girls and music shows, which I love. There are actually quite a bit that I’m interested in, and I’m actually not too sure that I’m going to blog all the shows that I signed up for since I’m starting my senior year of university. And trying to keep up with all the shows I want to just watch will be tough too, just like with the summer shows. But this season looks like it’ll be fun to watch. Also, there’s like…no fanservice harem shows. IS ANIME SAVED?

Nikolita: After picking up four shows last season and finishing off with Endride, I’m definitely going into this season with the intention of blogging fewer shows. There are a couple I’d ordinarily consider trying but I don’t think I’d like them enough to pick them up, and then if I like them I’d have to keep going with them, so it’s easier to just limit myself from the start. This season looks like a nice blend of romance and books, which is me personified. Watashi ga Motete Dousunda in particular will end up being my guilty pleasure this season, I suspect, and I for sure want to catch the first few episodes to see if it’s any good. Damn my reverse harem-loving shipper heart!

Charibo: Surprisingly enough, there’s only a couple of shows I’m interested in this season. I’m especially looking forward to Yuri!! on Ice, because sports anime is awesome and the animation looks gorgeous and also Gakuen Handsome (I don’t think I need to explain why I’m interested, this is clearly the AOTY). I’m also considering blogging about Natsume Yuujinchou which is one of my favorite franchises ever but I don’t know if I’ll manage to make entertaining and interesting reviews about it. Finally, there’s Haikyuu!! S3 of course, but I’m still salty about the number of episodes… Only 10 is not enough at all! So yeah, that’s probably the shows I’ll end up blogging about… and aside from the male idol shows I don’t think I’ll watch many things because everything feels “meh” to me.

Oki: I am excited for this season solely to finally see Kiss Him Not Me, aka Watashi Ga Motete Dousunda. The manga is hilarious and beautiful and while the premise seemed wonky at first, reading the manga every character grew and seemed to find a genuine place of love for the main character in their heart. The tentative nature of the show won me over and now I’m ecstatic to see what it will become! On top of that there are a few other interesting shows I hope to share, and of course Aoi Oni. If you need any background into that even you tubers like Markiplier played Let’s Plays of the game, but it is a fun experience on its own. Ugh, it should be a good season! (but Lord bless me all the meguca moe shows..)

Rewrite Episode 11: Countdown

Dawn of the Final Day.

rewrite-11-img020If you’d asked me, before the anime aired, exactly what sort of original scenes I wanted to see coming out of it, a brainwashed Akane talking to Midou would not have been one of them. I ended up enjoying that talk though, as strange as it was – I’ve found it really nice getting to explore all these possibilities beyond the character routes of the original game, as unfitting as the Kagari route label has turned out to be. I wonder if Romeo made it a point to include lots more Midou – he was kind of underused I guess. This Midou also feels far more affiliated to Gaia than the Midou of the Chihaya route, who was only ever loosely linked to Gaia and mostly did whatever he wanted. I’m a little uncertain about Akane deciding to give the Earth Dragon to Midou, however. Not least of all from a technical perspective, because from what I can recall the Earth Dragon needs a hell of a lot of Gaians to power it. It was made a particular point in the game. Whilst it was fighting Kotarou in both the Akane route and in Terra, I distinctly remember its summoners repeatedly dying and getting replaced so as to enable it to continue fighting. I know Midou isn’t an ordinary summoner (and neither are Tenjin and Tenma) but are the three of them really enough to run the Earth Dragon alone? As for his life span, it looked like Midou had already half-killed himself by reviving Fuego.

rewrite-11-img015At any rate, it’s a terrible time to be an Akane worshipper. I really liked the holy woman flashback at the start of the episode, along with the memories of Kashima Sakura slowly taking over her – it was mentioned in her route, but it’s amazing how similar Kotarou was to Suzaki in terms of the role they played to the holy woman vessel they loved. Makes you feel for Suzaki a bit more, and perhaps explains why he spent so much of the Akane route being so antagonistic towards Kotarou. Given that Kashima Sakura looks pretty dead, I don’t think we’re going to get to see that scene in the OP where Akane faces off against her – and not least of all, it seems like she’s already been taken over anyway. As much as I want to see her breaking out of it (and it seems like she’s trying) is that even possible? I’d actually rather see her not break out of it than break out of it because of the power of friendship. There are just some canonically established things that friendship shouldn’t be able to rewrite. See what I did there?

rewrite-11-img034I guess Lucia is also guilty of this to an extent. I certainly felt the irony in Kagari saving Lucia with her ribbons. My first reaction when Chihaya brought Lucia to Kotarou and Kotori was that it could be really unsafe for Kagari. Lucci (isn’t that the cutest nickname) isn’t a bad girl by any means, but I’ve always gotten the impression that she and Shizuru are far more loyal to their organisation than, say, Chihaya has been to Gaia. Even if Kagari had saved her life, I was worried that Lucia would turn around and attempt to kill her for the sake of humanity or something. Then again, she’s already melted before from Kotarou’s overwhelming display of friendship, so it’s not implausible. Maybe that episode had an effect on events after all! Interestingly, when Kagari offered Kotori her ribbons I also had the fleeting thought that Kotori would implant them into Lucia to heal her, and so Lucia would end up just like Kotarou. That moment of hesitation Kotori felt when the ribbons were put in front of her must have been picked up by anyone who’s read the VN. While we’re on that note, more references include Kotori talking about making familiars out of corpses while a shot of Chibimoth was on the screen.

As I mentioned last week, this is literally the first and only route where so many of the occult club members band together whilst the main conflict is still going on – it’s really weird, and all the slice-of-life scenes and occasional fanservice shots really makes me want a happy end. The unfortunate reality is that a happy end for humanity (and thus our characters) implies that either Kagari is killed, or that salvation is somehow stopped, averted or doesn’t affect too many people – and it’s got to be the latter this time, right? It’s the Kagari-chan route and all. She definitely won’t survive whatever the outcome, but killing her in cold blood is a little harsh for her own route. I’m also wondering whether salvation is mutually exclusive with a happy end. I’d hesitate to call something like Terra happy, you know? The way I’m thinking of it is that if Kotarou and whichever girl he’s with end up living together happily (and not too many people end up dying, not least of all the other girls) it’s a happy end. Chihaya’s route would be the best fit for those criteria, as would Kotori’s route and to a lesser extent Akane’s. I don’t know, maybe the contaminated power spot will have an effect in stopping Kagari from singing along to the song of destruction or something. Imagine the irony in that. Lucia’s poison actually saving the world.

Rewrite Episode 10: Simply, As Friends

What the fuck?

Rewrite 10 Img028What the fuck? Is Lucia really dead? I wasn’t concerned for her during her fight against Midou, not least of all once she got the upper hand and it looked like she had won – the chances of her losing were supposed to be minuscule. And even if she had lost, I was expecting Shizuru to appear and save her. Or even Chihaya, given that Akane has sent her over to Kotarou and Sakuya. The issue now is that Lucia has fallen down a massive crevice, and unless she somehow saves herself by creating a foothold in the rock using her sword, I don’t see her surviving at all. Are we heading towards a bad end of some sort? As conflicted as Akane seems to be, I don’t think she’s in any position to stop Kashima Sakura from triggering salvation, nor will she try to. I don’t think it’s up to Kagari to choose whether or not to destroy humanity if she hears the song of destruction, so the plan is most likely to stop Gaia. Midou wont be a problem given that he probably used up a lot of his life force to reignite Fuego, but the Earth Dragon will be. The current Kotarou is far too weak, so defeating it will most likely be a job for Sakuya and his final form.

Rewrite 10 Img017I might have mentioned this once before, but I’m in love with Akane. Huh? What do you mean I’ve said it too many times by now? Akane is just that perfect! I was really surprised to see her caring so much for Kotarou after he’d entered a route that wasn’t hers – she’s sent so many people to look after him, and during her discussion with Kagari it almost felt like she was about to have a change of heart away from the world view she grew up surrounded by. Isn’t she an angel? She’s not going to do anything wrong this time! I’d even like to think that if she could, she’d try to go against Kashima Sakura, but as the next holy woman there’s very little she can do. Unlike Kagari, she doesn’t even get the opportunity to find herself. The only way she can help is by lending Sakuya to Kotarou for protection – by the way, who else thought that Kotarou and Kotori were in serious trouble when Sakuya confronted them?! I pretty much assumed that they were going to be captured by Gaia at that point.

No, but really. Akane is the cutest and the best.

Rewrite 10 Img020I’m also glad that the questionnaire was brought up again. As I’m sure many of us were expecting, his answer was the one affiliated to neither Gaia nor Guardian, and was identical to what he wrote during the Kotori route: ‘I don’t know’. It essentially means that in Rewrite+, there will be two routes where he doesn’t know, two routes where he chooses to change himself, and two where he chooses to change the world. That being said, I’m still having trouble seeing this adaptation as a proper Kagari route, although I’m aware that the anime has most likely skipped out on a lot of content that’ll be in the game. All the girls seem to be prioritising their friendship with Kotarou and their ties to the occult club instead of staying true to their initial allegiances, which is something that should really only happen if they love Kotarou. In particular, I thought it was strange that Akane didn’t take Kagari in and just allowed her to leave with Kotarou. I guess it’s not like anyone has gone so far as to abandon their original objectives, though – Gaia only really want Kagari to hear the song of destruction (meaning it’s all the better for them if she has a bodyguard) and I’m sure that if either Lucia or Shizuru had stumbled upon Kagari whilst looking for Kotarou and Kotori, they would both have killed her on the spot.

Rewrite 10 Img023Above all however, it just feels really weird thinking of Kagari as a romantic interest – because as hilarious as she is, her current character feels more like a compilation of memes who’s occasionally involved in lewds and just happens to have a somewhat important role in the story. On top of that, Kotarou seems to have friendzoned her. In fact, I thought their interaction in both Moon and Terra was more romantic than anything we’ve seen here so far, especially as they were alone together for the majority of Moon. I still remember that dance on the rooftop of the abandoned shopping mall. At the moment, we have three episodes left, and Kagari has only gone as far as to ask whether Kotarou loves her when he is clearly nowhere near to feeling that way (not to mention the fact that she’s slowly starting to recover her former emotionless self). With so many plot points still to be covered, it’d be great if we got something even vaguely resembling a confession.

I have to say though, this anime is doing brilliantly as fanservice for those who have played the game. Almost fulfilling the Oppai End while Rewrite of the Life plays was way too overkill. Kagari holding and sitting on Chibimoth was also super cute, at least until I saw the two coffins placed by Kotori in one of the houses.

Seriously, I can’t imagine how Kotori can keep a straight face when looking at former Bond.
